First Build! Guitar for my brother

It's been a little while, but I've gotten some things done - however small they might appear. I've realized, as this project continues, that this project is much less a task of efficiency as it is an exercise in thriftiness and craftsmanship...

Anyway, so first of all, I altered the body template very slightly to get rid of the unsightly tear-out in the body. I re-routed with a template bit, and everything looks great now! I guess I don't have pictures to post of that now, but I will post some after the body gets routed and sanded.

Next, I finalized the fretboard template and began slotting. I'm using a standard miter box and saw to cut the slots...and having a terrible time. I've already screwed up at least two slots, so I'll have to fill those in with glue and sawdust and re-cut them. Are there any suggestions for a better manual way to cut fret slots?

Then I needed to plane down the back of the neck. So I did a little jig and made the neck flat! I am very pleased with how well this worked for me.

This shot makes the neck look crooked, but that's just because it is rough tapered. However, the back is very much flat.

The rest of my parts came in the mail!! WOOHOOO!!! :bassist:

Received my DiMarzio pups from MF too. They're gonna sound sweet.

I started working on the electronics, just for a change of pace, so I made a cardboard template of a rough idea of how it all will be laid out.

Doing what I can with the soldering. I did all the wires except those from the pups and bridge (13 to be exact).

I bought another toy to help me out with this side of the build. I can just picture my high school physics teacher smiling down on me.

I also finally purchased a Dremel. I've already used it a bit for cutting and sanding, and I plan to use it for inlaying eventually. I'm very excited to have this.

After looking at the pickups for a while, being a bass guy, I didn't realize that a pickguard or pickup rings are actually necessary for their installation. Woops. :rollno:

Never fear! I was giving a small piece of East Indian Rosewood that I discovered was the perfect size to make 3 pickup rings. So I began the work.

I marked the lines with a scribe (utility knife) and filled them with blue marking chalk so I could see the lines better while cutting.

The center single-coil will be sanded out to match the outline of the pup - that's why it appears to have less width than the others.

That's all for me now. Thanks for looking! More suggestions, please. ;)

I finally finished cutting fret slots. Just had to man up and do it the old fashioned way.

I collected the dust to use for wood filler.

Slotted board...it looks pretty clean, but I'm praying I was accurate enough.

I also decided on an inlay I want to do. It is the chinese symbol for "elder brother".

Gotta love the OpenOffice.draw rendering...:rollno: It works.

Now I'm ready to taper the fretboard, do the inlay, glue it to the neck, and begin shaping!

Hey everybody. Yeah, I'm back. Thought I should focus on graduating college there for a bit...

Anyway, this build is STILL going on (perhaps longer than pilotjones' build - which by the way, is by far my favorite thread on TB at the moment!).

There has been a lot of progress since I last posted...10 months ago. But most of that progressed has happened over the holidays and the last few weeks since summer started. Here's the photo-filled update:

My last post showed a computer "rendering" of the proposed fretboard inlay. Well...I attempted to make it a reality, and I think I did pretty well for my first inlay!
100_4661.jpg

Then I glued the fretboard to the neck thinking that it would be easiest to do that while both the neck and fretboard are still flat (even remembered to put the truss rod in!).
100_4667.jpg

After that dried, I left the neck alone for a long time - for fear of screwing up neck shaping and/or fretting. So I worked on the body.

Since August, the body has reached about 95% completion. I have routed the neck pocket, pup cavities, control cavity, and the bridge and tremolo cavities. I also recessed areas for covers, drilled holes for pots, jack, switch, and wiring from the pups to the controls. After all the hardware was fit and ready to go, I started carving - but I am still not 100% happy with the rough contours of the arm and belly cuts. I will look more at that. Here are pictures:

After routing neck pocket and pickups.

Starting to look like a guitar!

So...after all that, I thought I had better get back to the neck. So I made a sanding block with a slight radius to do the fretboard. Then I decided to wait to do fretting until after carving, so I spent an evening with a rasp and a file...

It is nowhere near where it needs to be - very chunky, but it is going better than I expected.

I will continue working on this through the summer. Hope to have it completed by my brother's birthday in August!

Just found this now! Guitar is looking great but my real excitement is for it's bass counterpart ... btw wheres the basses head? :ninja:

I left the headstock off that particluar drawing because I hadn't decided on a headstock design yet. It will be very similar to the guitar's headstock. I hope to start the bass project really soon (I need a new axe!!).

Don't want to alarm you mate, but you might want to check on the inlay character. My mandarin is rusty but I don't think that's older brother. =S

My roommate in college was from Hong Kong, and he assured me that this is the proper symbol to use. I know there are a couple different ways you can write it, though...not sure if it is simplified or what...

I appreciate the comments (been patiently waiting for some feedback). I have done more shaping of the neck and I think I've got it to rough shape now - it's not NEARLY as chunky. Hope to work more on this tomorrow!

EDIT: After looking at Google Translate  I found that writing "older brother" is different from writing "elder brother" (which is what I have inlayed). In any case, it will work for this purpose.

I hope yours will have an inlay of younger brother then! Get that bass started soon, Ill be watching :)

You bet it will!

Well, it's been a couple weeks and not much significant has occurred. However, I finally attached the neck to the body, so that was exciting. :hyper:

I did more sanding and cleaning up of the neck. It is getting very close!

The volute still looks massive, so I will bring that down quite a bit.

I also came up with a logo, but I am not sure of it's proper location. Here is an open office "rendering". :rollno:

And the real thing! Version A:
100_5234.jpg

or Version B:
100_5233.jpg

I know that Version A is a little non-traditional, but due to the shortness of the headstock and limited space, it might be a better spot... Please let me know what you think.

Josh

looks nice so far man! regarding logo placement, i think to add some spic it should be diagonal in the top left corner of the headstock, so the audience could read it if the neck was tilted slightly vertical, if that makes sense. i also like the idea of "elder brother" on the truss rod cover, in either gold or black.

where did you buy the truss rod at?

Purchased from StewMac. It's the dual "hot rod" model.

what router did you use

The majority of the routing was done with an ancient Craftsman. It held depth very poorly and had low power...but it worked. I just recently purchased the Bosch 1617EVSPK, and I am very happy with it. I liked having the plunge for doing the back cavities.

I think you should put that logo (which looks nice!) kind of like an Ibanez BTB places them ... if youre not familiar heres a picture :) I think it'd suit the headstock well!

Glad you like the logo! I toyed with it for a long time. It originally had the word "Guitars" underneath it, but it stuck out so much that it made the "JL" not so apparent.

I like having the logo angled in the corner, so thank you for the suggestions! Now I have to decide if I want to inlay in in black-bordered MOP or solid ebony... I suppose it depends on how much work I want to do.

I guess I have not updated this for a long time, but... it is finished!! I managed to get it done before leaving for luthiery school. My brother seems very pleased. It looks great and sounds awesome. Although it is nowhere near perfect, I learned so much from the experience. Here are some pictures of the finished product.

Currently working on #2 and #3! And cooler still, #3 is a bass!!! I'll have to start a new thread.
