First Build - "Lucifer"

@Jeff Siddall You could always do a big bathtub route and then use a pickup ring or ramp to hide the extra cavity, but leave yourself enough room to reposition the pickups?

Yeah... what I should have said is:

"One of the things I haven't figured out yet is a way to test the pickup positions without cutting a big bathtub route and then using a pickup ring or ramp to hide the extra cavity"

:D

So, even though I apparently need to do some more measuring and figuring and thinking, I decided to go ahead with this template as a learning exercise. For those who recall, I had hogged out the bulk with a large forstner bit after drilling my corners with a 3/8" forstner. From there it was cut some strips of MDF on the table saw, then use "the trick" (as Ben Crowe says we should now call it) to stick those strips to my template -

Then flip it upside down (because all I own is a bottom bearing bit), setup the router with the right depth, setup the world's jankiest dust collection, and start routing!

Yeah, no, the world's jankiest dust collection didn't work at all. :meh:
But, when I was done, I had this -

Yeah man, that's not bad. I mean, aside from the part where my pickups don't actually fit in it, but we're going for small victories here. ;)
I can probably just sand to fit from here. But I'm pretty happy with this as a first attempt. It may be junk because the pickup location may or may not work. But it was good as a learning exercise and I’m fairly confident that I can build a routing template.

Hold On A Minute:
So, while my fancy new StewMac string spacing ruler showed up yesterday (seems like it'll be handy for making this nut), I have to put this one on hold again. Not for a crazy long time like I'm known for doing, but at least for a little while here. I need to get to work on my YouTube Cross Channel Challenge project for this month. I've already wasted half the month almost and haven't done anything at all on it yet.

#YTCCC2021:
Yeah, so, now you're probably asking "YouTube Cross Channel Challenge? WTH is that?" Basically, it's yet another thing I really didn't need to get involved in but somehow thought "This will be fun, I should definitely commit all this time I don't have to it!" :meh:
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it and it has pushed me to be a much better wood turner than I was just a few short months ago. On top of that, it has also pushed me to take on tougher projects and really stretch my abilities in an effort to just keep up with some of the talent in this thing!
Oh, back to the "WTH is that" part. We really need a squirrel emoji! So, a bunch of guys that I've met through wood turning started a "cross channel challenge" where each month a different channel picks a "theme" and then everyone has to create something that reflects the theme. For those interested in my past month's projects, I've put together a playlist here - https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcd24ApEoKqZtBuA2bvii0gxa-PTyeh_y
For May the theme is "mimic". Pick something that inspires you, a painting, a sculpture, whatever, and mimic that somehow. I've got a great idea, I just need to get started on it. So Lucifer needs to go on hold for a couple weeks while I get it done and edit the video. I'll be back on this after that.

Stay tuned!

By the age of 60 (two months to go for me!), getting enough sleep is .....elusive. I tend to do all my bass building on my feet, because that’s how my tools and bench are set up, and just a whole day of that tends to tire me out. The thing I really miss is my once perfect 20/20 vision. I need a lot of light and magnification now for any kind of detail work, take care of your eyes!

Yes, I used to have great close up vision and only really struggled with distance at night, with artificial lighting.
Now my near sight is shot too.
2 of the kids just got Lasik and they were back in business the next day. No more glasses or contacts.
I'm seriously considering it.
Hearing is a different story. Mine is shot. And insurance doesn't cover enough of the hearing aids.

Dang, all the Cool Kids are doing multi-scale. I feel Worthless and Weak.

Ha! Not even. Even though everything of yours is boring and parallel so far, you get major points for craftsmanship and fastidiousness. Mine are just slapped together.... :roflmao::cool:

Well, I'm only 48 and my eyes are already starting to go. Probably a combo of staring at these stupid computer monitors for 9 hours a day and all those years as a young lad doing drywall and getting sanding dust in them non-stop. :meh:
Now I have glasses for staring at this monitor (or anything else up close) and my wife laughs at me because I forget them when we go out to eat and then I have to hold the menu way out in front of me. Hopefully I'll live to 60, but at this rate I have my doubts.
