Aged 4 or 5, my friend down the street's father ran a tiny record distribution company selling 45's to corner stores. We played this one over and over on the console record player in their living room.

I have no idea. It's just a song I remembered hearing many times. By different people. Like a folk song.
But I never hear it anymore which seems strange.

If we're talking popular, adult-style music, I have to go with Elvis' "Burning Love" as it was the first 45 I ever had. My parents took my sister and I to Peaches in the 70s and somehow I ended up with that. We were kids and I was super-young. I didn't really even know who the man was.

They took us back soon after to buy us albums. They let me pick out whatever I wanted, which I chose by the artwork on the album cover. I ended up with this...

I can't even begin to remember this one. I was born in 1953 and I do remember my dad playing the piano we had when I was around 3 years old. That's my first memory of music. But as far as first hearing the radio or of my parents playing records....I have vague memories of both but can't remember specific songs. I know the first album I had was Disney's "Night On Bald Mountain" that I played a lot when I was around 7 years old, so I guess that qualifies as the first remembrance with hearing an actual recording.

My mom and I came to America on a ship in 1963.

My Grandma sent my mom a 45 of Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand b/w Sie Liebt Dich in 1964, along with some Schlager compilations. German Beatles and Schlager were the first records I remember hearing/seeing.

Back in the late 60's, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my cousin Timm got a new-fangled portable 8-track player for Christmas. He also got "Meddle" by Pink Floyd. I think the first song he played, and the first song I remember hearing was "Echoes" and then he played Bette Midler, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (I think)...to this day "Echoes" is one of my favorite songs of all time.

What ship was it? I crossed the Atlantic from NY to Bremerhaven and back on the Bremen in 1965.

Exactly! Same ship, diffirent year! Except we were one way, Bremerhaven to NYC!

Unglaublich! Where did you live in Germany? My mother's family was from Heidelberg

I was born near Oldenburg, and lived most of my life in the USA. (Michigan, California, and Montana) Came back to Germany through no choice of my own in 2003, and fled to Saskatchewan, Canada in 2004. Came back to Germany, again through no choice of my own, in 2015. After 4 years in Frankfurt, I'm now living in Ingelheim, near Mainz.

There is a thriving wild parrot population in Heidelberg. One doesn't usually think of parrots when one thinks of Germany, but there they are.
