I actually mispoke in the video several times... the active preamp is on the piezo only... altho emgs have an internal active dif amp so... i guess both have preamps in that sense. the piezo can go active/passive... and in rhetrospect I wouldn't have bothered with that detail had I known what it would sound like in passive mode. that said... it does add a little tonal variety to the magnetics so... it's got that going for it... which is nice lol. thank you again for taking the time!It sounds great! I don't have much use for passive piezos, but the active / passive switch for the mags make sense. I only add piezos with their preamp on, even with passive mags, on my builds. The piezos really need the preamp, IMHO, not just power boost, but eq to tame the upper midrange "quackiness". Other than that nit, I loved everything in the sound.
Let me repeat, though, gorgeous work! And your fretless playing is better than you let on!

I hear ya there. couple years ago I bought an ibanez ergodyne that had piezo/mag and it impressed upon me that it's not just good for getting an pseudo acoustic sound... it's fantastic for adding that 'clank' for metal stuff, it can sound really good for a lot of things. I'd love to do a bass with the ghost saddles and add midi... but alas it is so expensive! someday!I do love mixing piezos and mags. I want it on all my basses now that I've built a few with them.
Exactly! Especially the full hex (or 4 or 5) midi hookup - a very pricey add, but do it once, and you'll miss it on all the others that don't have it! I've only gone that far once or twice, but I'm putting piezos on basically everything I build or buy now, it seems, and that gets pricey too. (I just added a piezo TOM bridge to my Chinese ES-335 ripoff "Chibson" guitar, for example, kind of "turd polishing", but it actually sounds pretty great!)

I was all "ok mike v... prepare yourself... someone is about to deliver a beat down to your ego" and then "you go and do something like that... and totally redeem yourself"! very much appreciate the humor and kind words!the only thing that comes to mind (the video and pics) is super! great looking instrument --- and it sounds just super! congrats on all counts!
i hear you on the pricey... the first saddle i bought for this was $15... then I had an issue (classic: cut through the cable while installing the pu) and had to order another - now $35 is the only one I could find! that said... it is a really nice sounding piezo. separation between the elements is great. still no where near what the hex setup would cost!
