My dad took the boat out for the first time this year to a nearby lake this past Friday and caught a few but did not knock them dead. Then him and I went fishing on Saturday at a friends farm pond. Was out there for 3 hours and not even a bite, was pretty windy. We did see a big bull snake and watched it swim, that was about the highlight of the trip. But it was still great to get out on the lake.

Trophy rockfish season opened up on the Chesapeake about a week ago. We limited out on opening day. Here's a pic of my buddy holding one and a gratuitous pic of another buddy trap shooting off the back of the boat on the way in. Good times!

Nice looking striper! What did you use to catch them down there? Around Long Island, the bite was on the jig early and now the troll with wire line. Bunker have been sighted off the beaches and I hope it holds them until I can get out again. The lower unit on my boat is blown and I am waiting on another.

Nice touch with the sunseting trap range BTW--

Hey Jordy, that's mono. The line test varies on who brings the rods and the time of year, but that was probably 25. We occasionally use braid as well.

Yes, as you know, we deal with firearms a bit differently here.:hiding::D

Well its Smallmouth season in MI. This is the time of the year the big great lakes boys get within casting distance if you're wading. I lost count yesterday at about 50 fish, and I still have smallmouth thumb from lipping fish as I released them. Here's one of the better fish.

With a personal background in mostly large trailerboats and flybridge gamefishing boats, small inflatables have always been a 'big boat tender' to me, not a fishing platform. I just don't like the idea of hooks and knives inside what is essentially a big, oddly shaped balloon.

Ever thought about a kayak? The Hobie's in Australia have really taken off, they have two different propulsion methods (paddle and foot pedals), I think some models have the option of mounting an electric motor, depthsounder setup capabilities, rod holders, storage compartments. Serious solo fishing setup if that's something you're after, guys here on the eastern seaboard of Australia have been going offshore in them and catching sharks, even marlin. In the video below, the angler gets towed half way to the continental shelf. That's about 10 miles offshore here.



For my buck, I would probably just invest in a small aluminium runabout. Something in the 12 feet range with a 15hp outboard would comfortably fish you and a friend. Out of the options of inflatable, fancy kayak and runabout, my guess is that it would be the best value for money. I bought myself a 12 foot fibreglass runabout powered by a 40hp 2 stroke with forward controls, it is excessively fast. Which is just enough for a guy like me, I don't like to waste to much time travelling between spots :D

Just gotta remember to button off when making a turn or else I will be getting thrown in the big drink :rolleyes:

Smallies are a blast on light tackle. I will probably chase them a couple of more times and then start chasing trout with the Fly rod. Well have days here in May where you can catch 50 or more bass with the Fly Rod on the surface. It's a hoot no doubt. I no upper NY state is similar, we have some quality SM here, my biggest was 25 1/4" and went around 7 pounds.

On Saturday, May 12th, we hit the lake and the feeding frenzy started. As many panfish as we could haul in our boats and were willing to clean and fillet.

I caught 5 bass above the limit of 14" with the largest at a bit over 17" (see pic.)

We'll be heading back Memorial Day weekend for more but I suspect the bass will still be spawning so they won't be too hungry.

Cracker! Hope you see a few more that size soon!!

Fishing has slowed here in Aus, pretty much most of the billfish have moved on from Sydney. Have been a few big Yellowfin Tuna around off Sydney, biggest I heard going around 200lb (Australia see's an average size for Yellowfin tuna of around 75-100lb). It's good fun and they pull HARD, but I don't really like going offshore at 5am when there is still ice on the boat's windscreen :hmm:
