Fodera Club Part IX

To change up the direction of the thread a bit...Jason told me in an e-mail today that strings should be going on my new YY Deluxe Monday or Tuesday... I cannot wait! Not only will it be a first for Fodera to put flat wounds on such a bass, but it means that my new bass is less than a week away from heading my way! WoohooI'm also getting a new little Fender amp (a Bronco 40), maybe coming tomorrow, for practice (and programmable amp modeling), with a headphone jack and iPod input...perfect for learning and not bothering the household with too much thump.
By the way, does anyone know what Fodera's standard shipping is? FedEx, UPS, overnight, second day air, etc.? The only reason I ask is that I've always tried to expedite delivery of my instruments, primarily because I like to minimize the amount of time they are in transit...less chance for anything bad to happen on the way, don'tcha know!?
That last few days of waiting is the WORST. It doesn't matter if you waited 18 months.
Do the fodera fingerboard always stay nice,smooth, and slick feeling forever? I have no clue how they feel so "smooth"
Thats what really made me jaw drop was the feeling of the neck...so easy to play..
Whoever said the instrument you play doesn't matter obviously has never played a fodera.. Dont get me wrong the music comes from you.. but the instrument matters..
Also are the fingerboards on the YYS and Deluxe the exact same?

I've heard just as many good or bad comments/stories about fodera as I have about just about any other builder(in terms of built quality, parts etc.)
Same goes for like/dislike.
I have also heard some very organic sounding marleaux basses,and like fodera and others they are not inflexible when it comes to fulfilling customer's requests.
( I don't know where the marleaux comparison came from, but since it did...).
As always, try before you buy.
How has your experience been with them?
My experience with the guys at Fodera has been great. I bought a brand new Emperor 5 about 6 or 7 years ago that had a bad bridge pickup. Joey sent out a replacement overnight and in the package was a Fodera T-shirt and a couple color brochures, one of which was obviously intended for the Japanese market. Very cool. However, I have experienced less than great fretwork on a few new basses including the one I had with the bad pup, which that and the bad fretwork aside was one of the absolute best basses I've ever owned...wish I still had it. The frets on my very first Fodera which was also new was perfect and probably the best playing one of any of the 6 or 7 Fodera's I've owned. I would love to own another Fodera but probably never will due to the price. The Emperor 5 I bought new in 2005 I paid I believe around $4500 for. I sold it a year later for $4500 which was nice. A year after that the bass sold used for $5500, crazy.
The MG5 I used to have gets sold for $1000 every time it resells. I should've sold it for an extra $4000.

Wow, great share. Thanks. That was surprisingly musical. I hate to say it that way, but when I saw that trio I kind of thought I was going to get chops fireworks rather than something that fit so well together and went someplace. Thanks again.
Motos playing is great and I did whole vibe. The music is great. Wonder if his MG have walnut body?

The E5S has a compound radius FB. Since they are hand sanded, they will vary slightly, but generally they are roughly 9" at the nut and 18" at the 24th...

We use EXACTLY the same FB materials on the YYS and the Deluxe. So, by way of example, we pull the Ebony FB's from exactly the same pile of wood for both instruments.
One difference is the inlays. On a Yin Yang Deluxe, we use real Mother-of-Pearl, whereas on the YYS they are Pearloid. NOT because we are trying to save a couple of bucks in materials, but because on a YYD the large Pearl dot that is part of the YY design that is centered on the 24th, is actually three smaller pieces of MOP. Were we to try to hammer the frets into one large piece of pearl that size it would crack. With the YYS (and the Pearloid that we use) we save a fair amount of labor time...
There is no reason that our FB's shouldn't stay feeling smooth and slick feeling forever, unless the player is really rough on them and/or does not properly care for them...

Do you use a compound radius on the other models? I guess I am specifically interested in the imperial and emperor models. If so, is it the same 9" to 18"? And what is gained by having a compound radius?
I broke out my Emperor for the first time in a while today. It really was a blast to play. It's so cool how these basses will take ridiculously low set-ups that will let you play anything. I was doing some downtime shedding this afternoon and the Fodera was just what the doctor ordered!
Now I should break out the Presentation and bring things to a whole other level of sublime. ;-)

i saw this instrument when i visited the shop in brooklyn this last week. in person, it's rather stunning. i didn't play it--it's much too pretty for the likes of me ;-)

I always wanted a small practice type amp and I've just gotten one. I don't know if any if you may have a Fender Bronco 40, but it's really a nice little unit! It's an amp modeler, with a 10" speaker, an input for an iPod/MP-3 player, and a headphone jack. Now, I can play in my bedroom, and not bother anyone! I found what is for me a really cool website called Songsterr, which has tabs and audio lines for all the parts of songs (including the basslines), which I can now run into the amp. and output both the sounds from Songsterr and my bass into my headphones. I know this is nothing new to any of you, but I am just thrilled at the simplicity of it all. Now my new little Bronco is waiting for it's big brother Fodera to come home

I have one room for music (my son's keyboard, drum kit, and one of my cabs and a head is in there), but most of my practice is actually done through my laptop. I have an Apogee One interface and plug in direct listening through headphones. I can run tunes and also play to a drum loop and/or metronome. And surf TB
I have used Garageband as a 'practice amp' in the past, but I guess I wanted a little combo to move around the house if I want to. The Bergantino (IP310), albeit reasonably compact, is too big to roll around.

The compound radius is a "standard feature" for every Custom Shop Fodera. We did not use the compound radius on the NYC's. The E5S also has a compound radius.
The advantage playability-wise really happens in the upper finger positions (say north of the 14-16th frets) where the natural shape of your playing hand starts to change and a flatter board is better suited to that shape...plus if you execute bends in that region of the fingerboard, a compound radius allows this technique to be executed cleaner...
