This picture of herr rockets' Imperial is just amazing! This is pretty much my dream bass. An Imperial with a mahogany body, koa top, and ebony fingerboard!



That is a beautiful bass Mr. Rockets! :D

Haha.....LONG story/path. Originally ordered (2003) with Aeros, delivered (2006) with SD Duals (that were mis-wired from the SD factory). Tried the Big Singles and liked aspects of them...but I had issues with them not being in the right position (the bass wasn't spec'd for that to begin with). Found some Aeros and really liked them but they were in rough ebony covers....

When Jason came onboard I had a few issues taken care of that I'd had since I received the bass new. (I also enquired about getting matching covers for the Aero's). While it was at the shop I ended up going back to SD Duals, as I originally ordered it. I love this bass....shes been my 1 and only since I got it.

Hi Garey,

Would you mind share us more about the tonal differences between Aeros vs SD in both dual coils mode and single coil mode???

You have the fairest commend on this as you have tested them in your same awesome bass!!

Wow that is a very circuitous route you took to get to SD's. Glad you love them.

I have decided that your bass is pretty much my ideal bass (aside from the black limba, but I could get use to it) , but just to double check... is your bass 34" and 19mm spacing?

Aero's and SD's both offer things I like...hard to capture in words. But overall SD's seem more flexible throughout all the different configs....blended, solo'd, single or hum.

My bass is 35" scale, African Limba/Korina. Black Limba has a different coloring, and possibly some other subtle differences. Tonally Korina is VERY much comparable to Mahogany. This wood was aged 40+ years when Joey bought it, AFAIBT. It is very resonant...

The knobs were done from the same wood as the top (which I supplied)....made by Roger at THG. The stacked volume/tone knobs never turned out right, which is why I have the gold knobs there.

Also, I've never gotten a really good pic of this bass...to me it looks much nicer in person.

having had both the duncans and aeros in my old emperor elite, the difference i noticed was almost just a series vs parallel thing. the aeros were very wide and hifi. the duncan duals had more grit,mids,and less extended airy highs. the same kind of effect you notice when you switch between series/parallel on something like a stingray 5.

single coil mode on the aeros sounded more like a jazz bass than with the duncans. if the aeros are meant to be wired parallel, than more wire per coil would end up with a better sounding split sound. the duncans were thinner split. overall i preferred the duncans as i eventually settled on using it in dual coil mode only and stopped trying to get it to sound like a fender.

PS: Its also got a hand-rubbed oil finish on the body, seamlessly integrated into a standard finished neck

I have a question for Jason or anyone else who might know the answer...

On the Fodera Newborn page there are currently two Imperials, a buckeye thats available for sale and a laurel burl. Even though they are both 5 strings the buckeye imperial to me, looks like the body is a little wider. Is that just an optical illusion? Or are the body sizes able to be varied depending on the customer?

The more that I look at it, the more I think I am imagining it...

Isnt Koa endangered? really rare or expensive even if you do get it i heard...

Koa can only be harvested from downed trees....windfall. Being that it only grows in Hawaii, and the good stuff actually comes from a few select areas...yes, it is rare.

Sometimes the body is sized differently based on scale length and string spacing. They are both 34" scale length, so my guess is that one of them has a more narrow string spacing than the other.

Or, maybe I'm wrong and it's just an illusion...
