Fodera Club Part V

That is Marcus' fretless Monarch. It was built for him back in 1985 (it is Fodera #175). It looks a lot like the fretless that I used to own (as did Richard Bona when he was with Joe Zawinul), but they are not the same.

Walnut body, Indian Rosewood top and old growth Indian Rosewood FB. It is what he played for the fretless work that he did with Miles on Tutu...the bass is currently traveling around the World as part of a Miles Davis exhibition. Marcus still owns it and (when it is not traveling) plays it regularly in the studio. If you listen to many of Marcus' tracks where he uses fretless, you will notice them sounding much more Fodera-like than Fender-like...

My former Emperor had a Braz rosewood truss rod cover, to match the board. Was kinda neat. Here's the only pic I can find at the moment, but probably have other, better ones if i dig around..

What a GREAT history! Thank you for taking the trouble to share it; I LOVE learning things like this. I wish Marcus would record with it more.

Cool. I actually had one on my old imperial also. I actually still have the cover but, sadly, not the bass... I guess I could put it on my AJ since that has a Brazilian board also.

Oddly though, I leave the covers off all of my Foderas.

Jason,

two questions. First:
I found this picture on the internet. What about the shape of
the PU wich is getting flatter to the B-String? If i would order a TK Model, would that shape apply to my ordered one, too?
I saw Toms bass and didn't see any shape like that. I think he has got flat ones, doesn't he?
BTW...is this because of the tonal aspect? (Ok lol, that was 4 questions in number, but i think you know what i mean. :D)

Correct...the B-side of the pup is just set lower (normal) than the G-side...in terms of the radius, those are actually flat plastic pup covers installed with enough tension to make them "radiussed" over the pole pieces (which have varying heights). This cannot be done with plastic covers that have holes in them...

In terms of the book, after over an 18 month hiatus, I will be taking on a co-author to start moving things forward again. It will, necessarily, be a somewhat different book as when I started writing it I was on the outside looking in...however, the co-author I will most likely be working with (is still an outsider). The last thing I want to write is a non-objective puff piece...
