Ramps - no ramps...hair tie at the nut - no hair tie....4 string-5 string-6string....high action - low action... this bridge - that bridge...high gauge strings - low gauge strings.... this profile neck - that profile neck....

These are all very individual and personal choices. It is fun to discuss our preferences and why, but to denigrate anothers preference simply doesnt make sense, it is all subjective...what do they call it in a conversation when one thing doesnt really flow from another.."non-sequitur"?...(someone correct that spelling). Put another way, it is not a rational response. I think much of the premise of TalkBass is simply to express our preferences and discuss them, in fact its half the fun.

On a more concerning note...Lowerb...bass?? FWIW..I have learned to always pick up my equipment at the depot, as someone already suggested. The delivery folk dont care (or know) if your package is a $10,000 Fodera or a $10 Fedora... that leaves too much to chance for my taste.

Wow Rich, I can't believe that happened to you as well!!! i sent #11 back to Fodera a few years ago for a tune up. We over nighted it back via UPS.. Didn't show up when expected, they said it was delayed and would be delivered the next day. I go to turn out the front lights and see it sitting out side the house, outside the front gate.. Which was unlocked by the way. They left it, didn't ring the bell, no signature nothing!! I had been home all day. I called them next day and told what happened and that if I wasn't honest, they would be buying me a new $10k bass since it was insured and signature required.. I could have just taken it in the house and said I never got it. A supervisor brought the driver out the next day who apologized profusely and begged me to sign that I received it. Which I did.
Bottom line is..
1) I don't use UPS for my equipment anymore
2) I pay the extra to have over night delivery (I'm in the states)
3) and the most important thing, I have them hold it at the facility and I pick it up. That is the key...

Wow, that's pretty lazy if they didn't even knock and you were there. I did the overnight delivery as well, which was disappointing that they did that when I paid extra. This happened two weeks before Christmas, so I assume that the driver had a crazy schedule, but that shouldn't excuse the company or the driver really. In the future I'll have to take your advice and just have them hold it at the warehouse.

Either way, they should still respect your property because it is their responsibility. They don't have to care about your package, they just have to care about doing their job right.

aint that the truth.

Wow Lowerb, I'd be livid.

Years ago I order a Mac laptop that I found out it was delivered during the day a little after lunchtime (left on the porch of my apt) while I was at work 20 miles away. It sat there for 5 hours, till I got home. This was in midtown Atlanta and not a great area to have $2k+ items sit outside in a box that is clearly from Apple. I did manage to give the delivery company a piece of my mind... it wasn't pretty.

This must be extremely annoying.
But unfortunately this kind of thing can just happen anywhere any time.
I ordered something not too long ago and that too got lost within the country it was sent to and was apparently already out to be delivered. So I guess someone made themselves a nice christmas present.
Annoying to say the least.
Now it's an insurance job.:hmm:
Good luck with the bass in transit!

Tom7 your points are valid but unlike Angus, I do see ramps as a fad for the most part just as the hair tie thing Wooten started.

Yeah, I DO think the hair tie thing is completely silly, but the fact that people adopt something (like the ramp) does not necessarily make it a fad. When it goes away entirely in a year or two, then yeah, I'll agree it was a fad. But I've been using one for over ten years. Am I doing it because it's a fad?

A ramp isn't hipster glasses, if you get me.

That's not to say ramps have no benefit for some. I think those that use them such as Willis and MG and other players of their calibre could play with or without the same but obviously prefer them for one reason or another.

They can play with or without them, and so can I, but we all prefer to play with them. That, by definition, means that they aren't a pointless exercise.

What I see happening right now is everybody putting ramps on their basses, most of these players have very poor technique in the first place and it's as if they are putting these on in hopes of developing or instantly aquiring better technique.

I haven't seen that- I think that argument is more valid for people getting nicer instruments than those installing a ramp.

It's more comfortable, so I don't see a reason for pushback (UNLIKE all the kids I see with hair ties, where there is a valid reason, as it means they aren't practicing proper muting technique).

But yeah, I don't need you to have tact by any means and I certainly would never, ever mind you sharing your opinion. Tact is most certainly not a virtuous quality in my girlfriend..and it's one of my favorite qualities about her. It's no problem!

That said, I know a lot of guitar players who would love a ramp if it could be installed. I definitely disagree with the fad comment, especially since they've been around for a long, long time.

BTW, Tom7, the guitar spacing has nothing to do with this, as I can still get my fingers in there and pluck like normal when playing classical even without nails. Not an issue, imo.

Bass should ship today (please god)! :hiding:
