as far as in know, there are impedance issues which mean that you can't have a completely passive piezo p/up. that being said, the way i mix the mags/piezos in my basses is using an outboard device so i can also go completely passive (no device/preamp) when i want (which is most of the ime these days). piezo goes to one side of the stereo output jack, mags to the other side. use stereo cable to raven labs pmb-1 (d-tar also makes something like this), which is two channels and i can mix to taste. the only thing i don't like about this arrangement is that the pmb-1 (and i think the d-tar thing) puts out LINE level, rather than instrument. kind of a pain. i talked to mike and david yates (last name?) about making something that didn't do this.

by the way, i thought i'd relate something along this topic.

i recently tried out a late 1989 6-string with one truss rod. i have a mid-89 bass with two. i checked and the second truss rod was completely loose. so i decided to take it out. the difference in sound was really interesting. to my ear it does make a difference. hard to quantify. i'd say it's more airy, a little more open . . . something else i can't put my words to quite yet.

line versus instrument? because using effects afterwards leads to some gain stage issues. i think there some of those anyway, without effects. nonetheless, it's a sound i've used quite a bit and find quite useful. it is a low-budget and not very elegant approach, but i like the sound better than most piezo bridges i've heard and is relatively inexpensive.

as far as i know, most effects pedals are designed for instrument level input , so the line level kinda messes with the gain structure a little (at least that's my story). i don't know the science of it, i just know what my experience told me. i think most amps are also designed for instrument level, but are more forgiving than the pedals.

again, my experience was with a certain device, so i assume that one could get something that put out instrument level—i think k&k audio (name?) makes one.

Anthony Jackson made similar remarks in an interview done within the last few years.

"Instrument level" being louder than instrument level, hence a need to re adjust volumes or sensitivities of the effects in the chain?

You guessed it... I'm guessing!:)

I personally do not really use effects and do not,apart from a glockenklang soul head ,have an amp with effects loop. And have never used the one on the soul and don't really use the soul head anyways...so I do lack experience as to amp/effect interplay...(if it was effect loops on amps that you were talking about in the first place ).

If/when I use effects I usually run from the instrument to the effect and then to the preamp-poweramp-cab(s).

nope, don't like effects loops, so i wasn't talking about. talking: bass > box for piezo/mag blend > effects > amp.

some of the blend boxes have effects loops, but i wasn't sold on those either.

I would LOVE to hear how Matt's acoustic bass sounds. Unfortunately there are no clips anywhere, and there is no way I'm going to a Whitney Houston concert these days! I'm really curious what it sounds like.

Gotcha. Let me know what comes of it if you don't mind....and ignore this part of my questioning from that other site. :)

Ok...now to write a tune for my S. Indian Rythmic Solfege class tomorrow......lots of winding rhythms on the way! How lucky am I that I get to take a class like that?!

Picked this up today in Brooklyn......another great thing about living in metro NYC area....spent two hours at the shop...what a great place.
