for what it's worth, i have some piezo film pickups UNDER the bridges on my solid bodies. you get some pretty nice body resonance and can even play 'em like a drum. i have it set up with passive mags and then mix on an outboard device (raven labs pmb-1) so i can get the attack of the mags and the body of the piezos. they feedback a little easier with distortion/overdrive, but can sound great. i, for one, am not a fan of the piezo bridges i've heard—much too brittle sounding for my taste.

Steuart, what is the piezo pickup that you're using? I've been looking for something exactly like that.

rick turner (of renaissance guitars, etc.) made me a bunch of them. cheap, not super elegant, but i liked 'em.

you can try him, but his lag is (or was? dunno) somewhat like fodera's pre jason righting the ship.

we can discuss more if you'd like. i stripped the onboard electronics off my basses to do it (but i like going completely passive to jack most of the time anyway).

I'd definitely like to know about it. I had called Rick a couple of months ago about piezos but he said he was too busy at the time. I need to try him a again.

My batteries die really quickly so I've been playing my bass passive a lot lately. I don't ever miss the preamp. I really want something like you have to pick up the resonance of the body to add to my magnetic pickups. Do you get more low end from the piezo film?

+1 I'd like to try that out as well. It's not just a jumper change though, you have to change where the pup wires are connected to the preamp AND change two jumpers.

I just changed the passive tone from the j bass to the p bass setting. Man, I really dig the p bass tone on this. The low end is a lot more focused now. I'm having a hard time deciding which setting I like better though. I like the warmer tone of the j bass setting also. I wish there was a switch for the passive tone!

Yes, I have been thinking about doing the Piezo thing,but have not yet come across piezos that sounded good passive(I don't want batteries in my bass).
Well, I may have , but I have not yet had a chance to try them.
Which system is being used on the MG bass you mention?

It has the most thunderous B-string I have heard on any bass since I have been here other than AJ's and Dave Swift's Presentations. I said to Joey about an hour after I was done fiddling around on it (I would hardly call what I do on a 36" scale 6-string "playing")..."I cannot get the tone of that B-string out of my head."

His response..."You better, unless you are willing to go to 36" scale, because there is just nothing else like it." Now the B-string on my 34" scale Monarch absolutely kills, BUT there is, of course a major difference between it and this 36" scale beauty...

Bummer given my 5'6" frame and hands to match!!!

Anyway, the tone of this thing is really wonderful...

That would be cool.. an extra switch to go between the P and J settings....
regarding the mid selection.. I set the MFS to mids.. and the choices to be mid-mid and low-mid.. I thought the low-mid setting made the bass a bit too thick sounding. If that makes any sense... Going to try the Mid-mid to high-mid next and see what that does.
I also got over my fear of messing with the Truss Rod this past weekend. I took it out and flipped it over into standard position.. piece of cake, as most of you probably know already... New Mexico is a very dry stable climate so once the bass is all settled in there won't be much tweaking.

Just as a heads up (but not to drag the issue out), this was indeed Ray posting. He sent me a personal email (not PM) today confirming his feelings, so if a similar post pops up, it isn't the job of a hacker.
