Fodera Club Part VI

Unfortunately it is not that simple. When we build a bass with dual coils, we position the outer pups (i.e. closest to the bridge and closest to the neck) in the "correct" single coil positions...so you would not want to place a single coil pup in the center of a dual coil pup cover...your pups would be out of position. Additionally, our dual coil pup covers do not allow for the proper mounting of a single coil pup...there is no way to secure the pup in place and make sure that it stays that way (at least not presently).

In terms of a way of dealing with a dual coil pup cover (with holes) that only has a single coil in it (Climb's question), we have not done that recently, but I am certain that we could make a set of "dual coil" pups with only one true pup and the other merely a fake set of pole pieces. I do believe that Joey had a couple of sets like that made in the early days.

However, at the end of the day, swapping pups in and out of basses is a PITA and the idea never caught on. As much as I love the single coil sound, there is simply no way that I am getting rid of my dual coil basses and/or pups...they too are awesome, just for different reasons...the flexibility is worth its weight in gold on a LOT of gigs and in recording situations...

Thats exactly why I'm ordering dual covers no holes....to be able to experiment and/or swap between singles and duals with no concern to the asthetics. I'm also going to ask Jason if they can make a little foam "mold" to hold a "single" in the bridge pup in the center of the dual cover ( will be 60s position for my bass).

Of course there is also Nordstrand Big Singles....which I've had, and if used properly, are incredible. (I mean used properly because they aren't drop-in replacement for duals...it sets the coil spacing too far out of whack as Jason mentioned above.) I've thought about using them in a build...but once its done its committed to using those, or sticking a regular single in the cover (if even possible, not realistic). Great pickup....

Hey Jason, as of now I was thinking of placing the center of the bridge dual in 60s position ( like my friends's AJ here) and live with the outer coil of the bridge pup slightly out of "regular" positions when I tap for "J" bass mode. That means the single placed in the center of the dual cover will be the same...in 60's position.
The dual placed in the 60s position (using the center of the dual pup) in my friend's bass sounds great with the wood combo I've ordered, plus I'd be able to compare it with a single in the same placement with no worries about routing.

The only question was to make foam implants for either side to hold it there.

I know a single can be put into a dual cover because thats what I have in my EMPII right now :)- SD singles under the dual covers at the outer sides of the shells....although I think we did have to carefully rout a slight bit of wood thickness out of the top and bottom of the inner walls to accomodate the slightly extra length of the single. It was really nothing . No problem.

As for swapping pups, it was not going to be something to be routinely repeated, but just to be able to compare and to possibly be able to do it now and then if desired ( once in a while I've changed from dual Aeros to SDs to dummy coils for years in my EMPII, plus the singles in it now). Swapping pups are a pain, yes. I really have not done it for a long time, but for a period of time comparisons between Aeros, SDs, and singles was very useful to find the best choice for the bass.

Have there been experiments with stacked and dummy coil pickups?
To get a singlecoil tone with no noise, stacked p/us seem to make sense...if built properly
I have heard some very good comments about some(i forget what manufacturers the pickups were made by,that I heard those comments about)

Just wondering.:)

I don't generally make sweeping generalizations like this, but I truly believe that it is not possible to get a single coil sound without noise without active intervention of some type and even then I have serious doubts. I've got some ideas about how to do it, and had a set of pickups made by Duncan that may do the trick but I still haven't gotten around to building the circuit to make it all work. I'm pretty sure it will work, but I won't know how well until I build it....which will be....sometime in the near....or possibly distant future.

Having done this, I can tell you that having a dual centered at a particular spot sounds like nothing that even resembles a single in that same spot. Different impedance, different aperature, different harmonic pickup points, phase cancellation of all common signal components.

FYI if you put the bridge PU in the 70's spot, it winds up centered at almost exactly the 60's position (within 1/16" on a 34" scale) which is questionable as to whether it can be heard).

My thinking about trying the dual centered in the 60s position was with total knowledge that it would sound different than putting a single in the same place ( for all the reasons you list above)..it was never a consideration that it would mimick anything like a single at the same place. Its just that an AJ I have played many times ( with the same wood combo I'm ordering) sounds killer with the dual centered there (60s)...and so why not try a single for comparison under the same cover (along with changing the neck pup to single also at the regular Jazz position under the cover)....I just have to position a single in the middle of the bridge dual cover. I cannot pre guess with 100% accuracy which pups for this bass I will like better, but I certainly can try to take advantage of the opportunity to find out as the rout and the covers are already in place.

The reason for all this is at this point my priority is to make either the center of the dual, or the single, at exactly the 60s position rather than making sure the outer coil of a dual is at the 70s position and compromising a bit on the center of the dual re 60s position.

The bass will have 2 pups so the outer coil of the neck dual will be at regular Jazz position, or if I have singles in it will be at that outer end of the cover. Like Vinny said to me and I agree..you have to decide what your priority is for positioning the pups, and again at this point my priority for this bass is finger tone with 60s bridge pup position either center of dual or single.

Another way to go is your adjustable pup!

Just a quick word in praise of Jason and Fodera.

I recently took advantage of a coupon code and bought some stuff at the Fodera store. Unsure if I needed a Fodera case in the standard or XL size, I used Fordera.com's web form to post the question. I was stunned at how quickly the answer came -- and on a weekend to boot!

Within hours of making my purchase, I got an email informing me it was shipped and giving me the tracking information. My order is here, my case is perfect, and I can't wait to wear my Fodera polo tomorrow.

THAT, my friends, is how to run a business! Very nice!

Thanks, Jason and co.

Speaking of the Fodera store, last year I converted to Fodera Strings (Diamond, nickel plated with Tapered B). I gotta say, that tapered B makes a HUGE difference in clarity and tonality. Every other B string I played always sounded too muddy and had a different "color" sound than the other strings, but this Tapered B matches the other strings PERFECTLY.

What would have to be done to a stacked pickup ,even in theory, if one wanted to try it?
A pickup wired directly to the socket and no electronics whatsoever...(and if you think a stacked, even though it has the narrow aperture and only one "line" of magnets sees the string, won't do it,how come?) :)

Thanks so much for the kind words...as a Fodera Customer (i.e. part of the "Fodera Family"), this is the kind of experience that we want you to have!

Regards,

J

Then he is ABSOLUTELY correct...our prices are WAYYYYY too high for just the wood -- even though much of it was purchased 10-20 years ago, is incredibly rare, was hand-selected for tone and sits in inventory so that it is perfectly seasoned when it is time to be used.

Which is why we also hand carve the wood to exactly each customer's specification, add all of our proprietary electronics and parts, set them up, put them in cases, etc.

;)

I think this is a jab
