Hi
here's the Fodera Family before the Imperial was sold

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Fodera Emperor 34"/Fodera Monarch 35"/Fodera Imperial Custom Richard Bona 34"/ Fodera Emperor 35"

With the sunlight in the garden
[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Is there someone who can tell me which wood is it on the top of the monarch ? When I bought it someone told me chestnut, other one a sort of buckeye... I really don't know.

Beautiful family you have there!! Wow, the top on that Monarch 5 is a TRICKY one. If I had to guess, I would probably say Chestnut, but it could very, very easily be Buckeye...if you are a member of Club Fodera (you can join on the Fodera website if you are not), you can send an email to the shop with your serial number and we can look up the specs for you if you want to be sure...

Regards,

J

Told you guys it was a tricky one...especially from a photo! Anyway, my first instinct was Buckeye but then I waffled and went with Chestnut! Certain pieces of the two woods are virtually indistinguishable from another looks-wise (and others are EASY). From a tone standpoint, they are essentially interchangeable when used as top woods...

Cheers,

J

Holly Wagner from fodera repplied me today with serial number : it is buckeye wood

Wow, thatcs a quite a collection you got there...
I've had many basses and changed a lot of them, got to a point that Foderas are the one and only...

Jason, dont know if Andy still has a fodera email, just tell him I wish him all best and thank him for being there for me while I was ordering my first...

First thought was buckeye, but i have seen some chestnut Foderas with quite a bit of green in them. Cool crotch pattern! Jason have you guys been able to acquire any more pieces of chestnut? I heard all of the chestnut tops came from one tree, and it was basically a freak of nature. I have always been curious about this. Seems like there would be some more out there, maybe not as spectacularly figured. I sure hope you guys acquire some more, and thank god the chestnut tree was not bought by a veneer or furniture company!!!

This is true...EVERY piece of Chestnut Burl that fodera has ever used came from just one tree. We have tried many times over many years to find more and never have...

Chestnut is still available, but we have never seen anywhere near the level of spectacular figure that "our" tree had...

I personally know of no such audio reference but would be VERY, VERY interested in finding one too. The problem with doing something like that is you need the same player, on the same day with the same rig with basses that are identical in every respect other than their construction...

We have never even come close to being able to assemble of group of such similar instruments. THEN you would need a really high quality recording and to listen to it on a quality audio system in order to hear all of the nuances...

J

Question:
Can anybody please point me to a resource from which I could hear the differences between a bolt-on, deluxe and elite neck construction with basses of comparable specs (model, wood, pickups etc).

Much appreciated !

Don't think we haven't thought about it! It's just hard to say to those that are waiting for their instrument...sorry, you have to wait a bit longer while we build three extra basses as an experiment. What we CAN do is to work them into the end of the current production schedule so that no one waits as a result of the experiment. Actually, I think that we will make that happen today which means that in 15-16 months we could actually get this answer!!

J

Jason, I totally agree with that. If anybody could pull that off, it would be you...

just built 3 comparable Emperors with popular specs, do the test and sell them afterwards...

See, easy... :p :D
