A person that plays really heavy and digs in AND wants a 33" scale would probably be disappointed in the B-string whereas someone with a light touch that is ding more chording and solo work might really dig the short scale and not mind the B-string. It's all a question of compromising the right way for the person that we are building the bass for...make sense?

It just occurred to me but doe lincoln goines not use a short scale bass with a B string?
I seem to remember reading somewhere that his travel bass is a 33" version of his main instrument, tuned B-G.
So finding a live video of him might give some idea as to the B on a short scale instrument.
I may of course be wrong...:)

I've played his short scale before, it's a B string with the extended-B headstock. I asked him about it during my lesson once and he said that his playing never required the high-C.

I have owned basses with 36, 35, 34 and 33 7/8 scale and they really don't sound all that different. IMO scale length has more to do with how you attack the string rather than tone. My Yamaha I have to play with a lighter touch but it still sounds great.

For all those who have been asking for an update, here's the first photo, courtesy of Jason.

Specs: Chambered Ash body/Alder tone block, Crotch Olive top, Brazilian f/b, 3 pc 35" scale 'thin/fast' Maple neck, 17.5 mm spacing, SD dual coils with matching wood cases.

Cool! But at what length does the string become useless tonally? I understood mostly what he was talking about and I might add, but can't find atm, an article that Rick Turner wrote about scale that was just as interesting. I'll have to find it.

I was speaking about practical use of the instrument. I believe that you can play a 33' scale bass in a band and the instrument will be just as useful if it were a 36' scale. I doubt it will get you fired for the lack of tone.

You betcha! It's been about 7 years since I first laid eyes on that block of Olive. I knew right then and there that had to be the top for my future Imperial. Many thanks to Vinny for allowing me to choose it for my bass.

It's a one of a kind top but in reality, there will be three basses in total that feature the Crotch Olive.

so you already own Nr. 1 or do you have Nr. 2 and Nr. 3 on order ?

this piece (taken from your webpage) is beautifull too :)

If I would would have to choose I would put this on an Imperial 5 w. Ash body, Ash toneblock, 34" Maple Neck w. Brazilian Rosewood board, 22 frets, SD Singlecoils and complete passiv (only Vol. and Tone) ....sorry just dreaming ;)
