Here's a good conversation starter: which bass player (or bass) drew you to Fodera? While I love Vic and his pretty basses (his playing ain't too shabby either, LOL) his tone never really drew me in. It wasn't until I was obsessed with Hiromi and watching Tony Grey's style of playing and hearing his tone when I was like "I definitely need to get me one of those!"
Gotta love those basses formally known as the AJ 6 Presentation!
I recall that the Presentation mark comes from the fact that it's built from the best of the best materials, and outfitted with proprietary titanium hardware. Jason at Fodera has also mentioned that the build process for an AJ takes significantly longer than their standard offerings. There's a lot of passion, expertise, wood shavings, and sweat in every Fodera, but this model is the highest expression of all that.
Presentations are also approved and evaluated prior to sale by their namesake artist - this is the only instance I can think of this happening in the world of fretted electric instruments. Granted, the title is lofty, but it is well deserved - they're the premier model of one of the world's premier builders played by a legitimately world class bassist.
I was messing around with my new Fodera Yin Yang, and a bass cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah started to take shape. I've always loved the song and wanted to reimagine it on the bass. The shorter version of the song that focusses on the slap portion of the song is here;

The full version is here. Not as "camera ready" for a youtube audience (first half may bore people) but it gives the full picture of what I'm trying to do. It's still work in progress (and I don't have the patience for a "studio perfect" performance when it comes to youtube videos - so there are a few errors) - but it gives you the idea.

Sounds killer! That's pretty much the perfect slap tone right there![]()
I just uploaded a super quick little video of my Monarch:

Will do something more full-length soon...

The hard choices: Monarch vs Emperor? PJ vs. Dual Coils?

To date there appears to have been only been ONE (1) Fodera with this spec. It was an Emperor II and it was completed in the Fall of 2008. Of course there may be a couple more out there because our early records are not perfect, but certainly that combo is rare. I too would recommend Dual Coils as the wood combo itself will be inherently bright and adding EMG's to the mix with this combo might send things a bit over-the-top in the brightness department...unless that's the tone you're looking for!!!
Cheers,
J
Jason, I know you must get this asked quite a bit, but how would you compare the tonal differences between Swamp Ash and Walnut? One reason I chose Swamp Ash was for the tone - a little brighter than alder - but another was the weight, as I've got some recurring shoulder/neck problems that would be alleviated with a lighter weight bass. However, I see a lot of walnut bodied Foderas with ebony fingerboards and am considering that combo as well. I might chamber it, though!
