on the walnut discussion. I remember first time i walked into the shop in 83 and Joey showed me a bass in process and i was hooked forever.....

Unfortunatley, none of the Foderas on eBay meet my requirements. I would also be happy to find someone located in Europe to avoid the oversea shipping and the massive import taxes from equipment coming outside of the EU. :)

Actually, there is a Fodera for sale in Europe, a very nice instrument, but I will give this some time, since I will go for dual coil pickups and a solid top if possible :)

I am aware of Ronnietex´s offer, but I want a different top wood since I already got a spectacular quilted maple fivestring.

Seriously, this is a very cool instrument.

By the way, I noticed you play with a "double bass fingering", not the one finger per string chromatic fingering.

Do you play double bass, too? (Edit: Just noticed that you obciously play the double bass :-) )

I play double bass fingering on the bass guitar as well as on the double bass and can really see the benefits from it!

I use the hybrid approach as well. The downside is that there are some exercises that you just can't do (ones that depend on one finger per string). One upside is that I find a tonal difference. A note where my ring finger is shadowing the pinky seems to be a bit fatter sound.

I guess you should be comfortable with both approaches. The double bass fingering has advantages in terms of tone and it also helps playing accurately and on time since the movement is more natural once you spend some time accustoming to it. I guess Robin did a good job explaining that on his video :)

Hmm, I don't find any tonal difference once you achieve enough force to hold down the fret fully so that it doesn't rattle. I don't actually use my ring finger to hold down the string- it's just resting there with as little tension as possible. I'll have to check that out more carefully.


On the URB, you have to remove your lower fingers to get the vibrato going all the way quite often, and I've never thought about the tone.

As for exercises, I do use all four fingers when I warm up, but when it's time to groove, much of that technique is not necessary- which is why I spend at least if not more time working with my right hand.
