It's funny because my instruments and my playing has changed/evolved a lot over the past two years. That's what a little obsessive behavior will do for you. There were a lot of years where I was playing on and off, and was primarily a fretless guy. I got into Rob Allens a little over a year ago and after cycling through a couple of them I settled on the ones that really send me (the Deeps). In the meantime I got back into 4-string fretted as well and after bouncing around a lot of fretted 5s and 4s I tried a Fodera and was totally sold. Koolaid or reality - doesn't matter. I know what I like - at least today . I've distilled down to PJ on fretted and Rob Allen for fretless. I just got an awesome Skjold fretless 5. But I'm just an RA guy on fretless.

On fretted I lusted after the YYS and finally tried one then immediately bought one. I dug it so much that I pinged Jason about ordering a Monarch as I love that body shape. We briefly talked about some options, I slept on it, then came back with my reality - I really wanted a YYD. The stars aligned and at the end of NAMM I'll be walking out with the YYD of my dreams. The YYS will be up for sale to try and stem my budget bleeding because I like to have a second/backup bass and I'm a sucker for walnut. So the CPO will get hardware swapped out for a reasonable upcharge, and I'll walk out of NAMM with that bass too. Oh, and Jason talked me into putting a deposit on a new Monarch as well (he didn't have to try very hard). We're leaving the spec open, but the plan is that I can play the CPO and if I really dig it just add a 3rd Monarch, or the more likely scenario would be that I'd flip the CPO when the new one is done middle of 2013. Sadly the fretless Skjold will be sold and I'll wait and see on the fretted sister. So at least I'm not out ultragobs of money in actuality as I've already fully paid for the Skjolds and the new RA.

When I find a bass, a sound, a feel, and a company that I really bond with, I go in with both feet. I think my reality is that I am going concentrate on two sort of general approaches to playing and *really* get to know those instruments inside/out. And that will be 4-string fretted and the RA upright vibe thing. Only other wildcard will be what Fodera pulls out of their hat on Thu.

While the other Fodera designs are exceptionally well crafted as well, I simply think their Monarch design and its derivatives like the YYD and YYS just "hit the spot".

Congratulations, Mr. nostatic, SIR! I bow to your Fodera disease! And here I thought I had it bad...you have me soundly beaten. THREE!?!?! I am a walnut fan as well, the reason for my far distant bass to be walnut bodied.

So, what is it that you are changing, hardware-wise. I presume you will have a black bridge/tuners? Please inform!

Another big Fodera Fan loves that bass...Victor Wooten. He played it at Bass Player Live and called Vinny the next day to say that he would love one just like it. The neck carve was modeled off of my '64 Jazz Bass and it just begs to be played up and down its entire length. That is a fantastic Monarch. I remember it very fondly.

I would be really surprised to see you flip the CPO. Jason and Co. would have to find an absolutely stunning piece of walnut (if that's they top you decide on) to compete with that one. Congrats on making the "right" decision!

Wow! nostatic FTW! I thought I was obsessive with my second Monarch purchase!

I know what you mean though. I just haven't felt a bass from any other brand that even comes close to the feel of a Monarch 4 with a "standard" neck. That's why I jumped in with my second as well (with a different P'UP configuration).

This post inspired me to change the hardware on my new NAMM bass from gold to black as well. Like you, I just really like black hardware. Spoke to Jason and it looks like I *just* squeaked in the request in time before they all go to NAMM.

Congrats! I know its a lot of cash, but you're not going to regret having them.

Hey question for everyone here. Have you have a special call out for your Foderas on your home insurance? I didn't with one, but with another one inbound I feel like its probably smart. Interested in what others are doing.

Yep, I have ALL my instruments, amps, stompboxes, keyboard, monitors, etc., covered by an external policy (external to my homeowners policy, that is). It's through Heritage, and they are great!! They cover instruments with, I believe, no deductible, and in addition to covering loss or theft, they cover repairs, and they ALSO cover the loss in value of an instrument due to those same repairs. Pretty amazing. I've never needed to actually make a claim, but they have been really easy to deal with. Rates not bad, either, to my mind. I have about $125K of coverage for, I think, less than $600 per year premium cost. I can get you more details if you are interested.

yeah man for sure.. I have everything listed with the ins co. It's actually a professional musician rider because I gig out. Make sure they have the right values and give them copies of appraisals if needed.

Right now i have a full house. Monarchs over emporers. I know now i will be ordering a 30th anniversary next year (because i have 2 83 vintage basses now..) , recently sold my tulip 6, but depending on next week...

maybe time to start up a support group for fodera over indulgence....
