While on the discussion of Green enviro friendly cars, I'm waiting for Mazda's Sky-D.

We need a vehicle that will fit our tandem bicycle inside and offer towing capacity AND have a 40+ mpg rating.

Oh, and room for all my Fodera basses. :smug:

I have a Skoda Octavia 4x4. Great for upright.

my previous comment was a hint: turbo diesel.

VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI. I have a complete amp setup in the back all the time (covered - no one can see), still have room for 4 or 5 people, and it has 235 ft lbs of torque. Oh, and I get around 45mpg on the hwy. :D

My all-time favourite is the Levy LM19 leather bag. It's lightweight, flexible, thick soft padded, fits most large basses including 36', has reliable zippers, additional room for accessories and looks and feels sooo nice. The Harvest is the best design and a top gig bag too - but I always concern the stiffness when I put a bass with an angled headstock into it. For Fenders they are great too, but I didn't prefer them for my Foderas.

The LM19's list price is out of this planet but store prices are about half of that and they appear sometimes on the FS forums... and to be honest: I don't save a few bucks on a gig bag when I carry a multi-thousand dollar bass.

The soft leather of the LM19s is reliable enough for gigging when I carry the bass myself. I would never use a gigbag when my basses are moved by others.

Mono and Mooradian Bags are top brands too. I just prefer the look and feel of fine leather.

I only use gigbags because I'm not a fan of cases either. In terms of protection and storage space, it does not get better than iGig (G515) and Access (Stage 5). I'm not usually one to speak in absolutes but these guys are easily the top of the heap. I've drop tested the iGig on cheap basses from waist height and checked the setup, no changes in the setup and not a hint of physical damage anywhere. The iGig is on the heavier side of things but it's completely worth it. The Access is significantly lighter and has a rigid frame but is nearly impossible to find unless you get a Sadowsky Portabag or order a bass from Pete. Undercover is good too but I really only have mine because I needed a quality double bag that wouldn't kill me if I decided to go up a flight of stairs.

I have been using the LM19 as well to carry my basses as I like leather bag!!!:o

Glen Cronkhite gigbag for me. Nice leather - thick padding inside. Handmade in the US. Completely custom made to your specs. Love them!! The one I have for my Fodera and other electric basses is a 'standard' bass guitar size (shown below), but I had him make a custom bag for my Kinal as well, which is an odd shaped bass (short scale 6-string acoustic bass guitar). He had me send a full size sketch/tracing of the bass, along with some detailed measurements, and then he made a bag that fits it perfectly. :D

Thanks Len. With all the recommendations coming in I'm going to devote some more time checking them out.

The Harvey's, Levy's and Cronkhite are great g-bags, and they all have a front handle, which I use quite a lot. I like the idea of keeping the bass as upright as possible when walking around. I take my bass to work in the morning on the tube (subway) and I work in a popular tourist area, so I'm always a bit worried about people bumping into the neck, so ideally, I'm looking for a robust bag (with good protection, not too heavy and possibly waterproof) with a really good front handle.

Kwesi's post on the IGig (G515), and other TB'rs comments have made me review that one again. So the hunt continue's...

I've used iGig bags for the last couple years and have been as happy as I can imagine. I've flown with them a number of times, too (onto plane, putting it in the coat closet; not checked in!). Couldn't be happier. I like Mono cases, too- I just happened to get iGig first.

I'm not so much into the leather bags. Not enough protection for me.
