#2 with wood covers IF the top is thick enough for them to perfectly match the covers to the top. If not, I think #1 with plastic cover.

#2 for sure. I'd go for wood covers, or open coil. I personally don't like plastic covers, but that's just me, and it's your bass.

I wouldn't necessarily call it mellow. It reaches fairly deep and has some sizzle (I think that Braz has a bit more top end than Indian rosewood). It doesn't quite have the midrange feel that the YYD has. I find that the chambered walnut and ebony fingerboard is a great combo that gives some air and punch at the same time. The Monarch feels a bit more old school which is what I was looking for. Basically I wanted a "great P bass" that could also get some bridge J pup burp when necessary.
I need to get it into a proper mix though. My hunch is that it is a bit more supportive than the YYD, and won't go for the throat as easily as the YYD. If I want to slice a mix in half, rolling to the bridge and dialing up some bass and mid just kills.

That makes some sense to me now that I think about it- since it's covering what you might have done with the Sadowsky P/J. A good traditional tone that will leave less causalities.
Are you loving the Brazilian Rosewood as much as I do? I just got booked for a last minute salsa gig tomorrow night and it's great for something like that where I want some darkness but a little snap sometimes.

This is about the time I wish I was good at photoshop because I really want to see how'd that look lol. Although it'd ultimately be a major disgrace to the beauty of the instrument!!

A very quick/dirty/sloppy A/B. First is the Monarch, P, mix, J, then YYD P, mix, J. The Monarch has new strings, the set on the YYD has seen a number of gigs so they've got a fair amount of wear. One thing I love about Fodera (basses and strings) is that tired strings still work in a mix.

#1 is not bookmatched yet and, to complicate matters, #1 is what I would refer to as a "sleeper" top -- meaning that it looks less stunning now than the very, very intense look of #2 but when properly sanded and finished that flame will be sooooo three dimensional and incredible that it will take your breath away. We see a LOT of wood here at the shop and Walnut with that level of intense flame is truly rare.
That said, these two tops could not be more different in terms of overall look and feel...you cannot go wrong with either. It's pure personal preference.

Got to agree with Jason. #1 when cut and sanded will be killer, whereas #2 is just outrageous. I'd go for #2.
The latest MG Imp (Box Elder Burl) is a beaut and looks the whole package with the Gold hardware.

I thought that was why we are all buying Foderas.
