It doesn't have to do with neck pitch or anything like that, it's just that as completely hand made instruments there were / are variances in the relationship between the height of the FB and the top of the body. 99% of the time this does not cause an issue...but every once in awhile when someone wants to play with super, super low action the bridge may need to be modified.

whoops I did it again again...
After a brief foray with a Sadowsky as a second fretted I found that it just wasn't floating my boat. I asked Jason awhile back to keep an eye out for something that might pop up and lo and behold, a dealer order that was supposed to be chambered but wasn't became orphaned. Since I'm a sucker for koa...well...

I sold the walnut top one. It was a great bass but oddly enough I found myself preferring the control layout on the YYD (which is the Monarch layout). Little things bug my OCD 
... I think that we need to hold an intervention!!

Wow - beautiful. More importantly, your Fodera spending spree is making me feel much better about myself and my recent Alleva Coppolo buying frenzy! You're in for a few more bucks than I am!

I was just thinking of you as I was looking at the Rob Allen website for the first time, very impressive, especially the Deep 5. If I didn't play URB I would own one of those for sure.
So what does this bass offer that you're not getting elsewhere?

So what does this bass offer that you're not getting elsewhere?
I just got my Deep 4 and I am *thrilled* with that bass. I also am *thrilled* with my YYD. Those two basses are pretty much polar opposites but they cover about everything I need.
As for why another Monarch, part of it is just wanted to have a "backup" for the YYD, and also the fact that for some gigs I may want a bit more sedate look while keeping the same capabilities (24 fret, active PJ, etc). I picked up a Sadowsky PJ as a backup/"traditional" instrument and while it was a very nice bass, I missed the Fodera feel/sound and the extra frets.
Next up is the Matt Garrison Std, but that is a different beast that has different capabilities. I like to keep the number of instruments to a minimum as my brain can't deal with too many variables. So for better or for worse I've settled on the Monarch 4 platform for fretted and RA 4 for fretless. I like to be fairly monogamous. So right now first call for a lot of my gigs is YYD and Deep 4. For the more rock gigs, it will be YYD and/or Monarch 4. The MGS will be possible backup for some gigs but I want to work on solo/duo stuff with that instrument.
But next week I may change my mind
I have a Deep 5 and wholeheartedly agree -- they are awesome basses. I dig mine a lot. Mine is actually a 34", which serves me even better than his standard D5 (which re 35".)
My D5 is 35" scale, and while Rob's basses play "shorter", I find that I prefer the D4 now, in part due to the 34" scale matching the Foderas. Funny that a couple years ago I only owned 5-strings, now I'm back on 4s.
Here's two of the three tops I got a peek at for my Imperial MG 5 from Glenn at ABT. He said they're appearing a little redder/oranger in the pics and that both should have more nice dark chocolate color in real life, which I was requesting.
I like the uniformity of the flames on the first, though the second on is really interesting as well. Really interesting- it's making me question my decision to go with plastic pickup covers since there' so much nice figuring in the middle.

I'd go with #2. I assume #1 is only the left half of the body?
With dual coils and that much figure I think wood covers are worth it. In fact totally worth it since I'm spending your money

Yes #2 is already book matched. Not sure if 1 would need to be sawn in half to get the book match or however that works.
