Jason,

Is this ANOTHER chestnut top that 'got found' after mine? Or is it something else? Just curious...as I thought that the one I 'stole' was the last one. I don't care a bit, as I said, just curious :smug:

Also, since I saw your post (I've not been hanging here for the last few weeks, so just catching up) about 're-evaluating' build dates, does that mean the dates for any of the customs like mine, originally spec'd for a January 2013 start, might move up? Again, I don't care, and in fact, would probably rather my build date stay where it was, or even move out a bit (maybe we can even work out something if someone wants to move a date up), but again, just curious!

Hey John,

I'll let Jason answer the question about the type of finish on your bass, but regarding the MINWAX, I actually bought a tub of it before my YYD arrived, to have available. Just to see how the wax would affect (if at all) the finish, I put a bit on per the directions. I noted that the finish actually 'shined up' a bit. I don't mean glossy at all, but the sheen, especially on the ebony part of the top (less noticeable on the maple part) seemed to become a bit more glossy. Not glossy in an absolutely sense, just a bit 'more shine' than before. I would say that if you were going to use the MINWAX on a dark top, you should probably consider going over the whole top, rather than just a small section. Again, Jason can chime in with his experience, but this is what I discovered. YMMV, of course!

Fwiw I have never played a chambered ash body I liked. Then again, I've played very few sold ash body instruments I've liked. Something about it just doesn't thrill me. I have chambered alder bodies on my Rob Allens but that is a bit different beast. I *love* the YYD, probably in part due to the chambering. It has a different feel than the solid body alder.

Sorry that I missed that one!

Anything within the past 20 years has either a catalyzed urethane lacquer or catalyzed acrylic lacquer finish (we changed to acrylic in early 2010). Depending on the wood adn how much paint it absorbed and/or needed to fill small voids, the instruments get between 9 and 15 coats. We hand sand after every three coats or so. Then after the final sanding we wax it with Bowling Alley Wax...

No, actually the Chestnut top that is available was reserved for a customer that changed his top at the last minute to a different material. So we always knew that we had this one...we just assumed that it was spoken for.

As for existing build dates changing...no, they are all still as per original estimates given out at the time instruments were purchased +/- a couple of weeks in either direction...

These two were, indeed, just a coincidence. And, since they were not being made as part of a controlled experiment, we made no attempt to do things like make sure that the body wood, neck material or FBs came from exactly the same pieces of wood. We do that when we build the three...trying to eliminate as many variables as possible.

A couple of tracks from last night's trio explorations. I like the Monarch's voice. Tonight is a much denser mix but mostly supporting vocalists so it should shine there as well.

I thought i would share some photos from last nights Flecktones show in Naperville, Illinois. Really good show, enjoyed watching all the musicians hand grooves and solos off to one another. These guys had grins on their faces the whole time, truely amazing to watch. As usual Vic was at his best with his Fodera. Very nice guy, made time to not just shake everyone's hand and take a picture with everyone in line-but also to look them in the eye and have a personal conversation. And of course Im having GAS like everyone here for another Fodera, as if I thought watching Vic play would cure it!

This may be a loaded question. Does anyone know if a Fodera is available for viewing/playing in the CT, NYC area?

I have never bought an instrument without "hands on" inspection first and very curious about the product line, I am an Alembic junkie and have several.

You can make an appointment and come up to the shop and get your hands on a few to see and play...we are located in Brooklyn (our favorite part of the NYC area).

I like the Monarch's voice also, as well the playing!

I was checking back over the specs for that Monarch, and found a discrepancy on the Fodera newborn page. It lists the body wood as alder(which it appears to be in the pic), but in Jason's description he says it is mahogany. It is alder, correct?

Yeah, it is bookmatched alder body. The koa is sick in person - photos just don't capture it. And the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard - well, there is a reason it is so sought after and pricey. In all a pretty special instrument.

Tonight was back to back - a jazz hit from 4-7pm, then a nostatic revue show (5 different vocalists) from 8-11pm. That's a lot of notes. Took the Deep 4 and the Koa Monarch. I'm finding where that instrument fits. Kinda like anything you'd want a P-bass for that bass will cover it but with more glass on the top and the ability to dial in some different tones. What is interesting is that with the YYD I prefer the mid switch at the higher frequency (giving it a bit more upper mid bite) while on the Monarch I like it in the lower setting giving some extra low mid beef, especially rolled on the bridge pup.

Sadly, until it gets nicer outside, I cannot oblige...I have no place large enough in my house to lay them all out and get them all in the picture. I must admit that this is probably THE definition of having too many basses, but I know I owe you guys a family snapshot and as soon as its warm enough and dry enough to bring them all outside I will take care of it!!
