Cool comparison. I heard very little difference between the YY basses, but if anything I liked the YYS a bit more - sounds a little cleaner and tighter to me - and interestingly very little difference between all of them with neck pickups soloed. with all pickups full on I liked the Monarch best, and with the bridge pickups soloed I liked the Monarch best too. Seems just to have a little more depth and bite.

I should qualify this by saying I'm not a great fan of EMGs so take my comments for what they are. But man, you have a great Fodera four string collection. Enjoy them all.

Okay Todd, questions on your (very, very nice) comparison audio clip. What were the tone settings for each of the basses (I assume active, and tone controls flat)? What were you recording through? Were these direct into something, or were you recording through an amp? If an amp, what kind, and what settings on the amp?

Sorry to be a pain, my friend, but inquiring bassists want to know!

No problem Curt. They are all active with eq flat. I'm going direct into an Apogee One interface into a MacBook Pro running Logic. No pedals, no eq or post, just direct record (with a drum loop on another track) then bounce to mp3.

I have flats on my Rob Allen, but that isn't the sound I'm going for on a fretted bass. I've grown to really like the VW light strings.

I am certain that you have done this already, but just to be safe...make sure that you have the gain dial on the internal preamp adjusted exactly the same on both instruments...it can make a very, very big difference in the comparison. You also need to make certain that the pickups are set at exactly the same height on each instrument. Even 1/16" pup height difference will COMPLETELY change the way the bass sounds.

For these reasons we generally play the instruments both acoustically or we use the passive mode with passive tone all the way up and volume full on for comparing from instrument to instrument here at the shop...

I've tweaked the pup height on the YYS and YYD - haven't touched the Monarch yet. I usually try to run it so that the P pup is a bit lower so I don't get as much of a volume drop when I roll onto the J pup. As you indicated it also changes the flavor of the PJ 50/50 sound significantly when you alter the relative heights.

If I find some time/energy tonight I'll re-record passive with the eq wide open. There still will be the issue of string wear as I don't want to put a new set on the YYD because they still have plenty of life in them.

Should be around a week now.. received the final pic of the bass.... It is truly amazing!!!

That's good news. I've got a long wait ahead of me, but I don't think I'll risk shipping, I'm prepared to collect it in person. Presumably you ordered a hard case with the bass; is that the "new type" case as seen on the 2012 pricelist, if so, how different is it to the standard hard-case?

I planned to collect the bass myself but gig and schedule just crashed....

Oh....I just spotted that option. What is the difference between the custom shop one and the elder one??

Can Jason shred some lights to us??

The new case will roll out sometime later this year. We had hoped for January 1, but our supplier messed up the first run of them and they had to be sent back. No definite date yet, but sometime in the next 3 months we expect to transition to a new case for the Custom Shop instruments that will feature a black "Elephant Skin" material on the outside, embroidered Fodera logo (rather than painted) and a crushed red velvet interior. The Standards will either stay with the current case or possibly get a different one from the same manufacturer. The new high end case physically looks like our current case...just with vastly upgraded materials.

We will probably have a program for trade-up for anyone who's bass was completed within the past 3-6 months where you would just pay our difference in cost plus shipping and swap them out if you wanted...details will be announced when we have definitive shipping dates on the new cases...
