I loved all the pictures you took of you playing it, and the MGS. I think it's a great help to many to see the basses in the hands of an actual player, to get a better sense of the layout, size, etc. I think you did both myself, and others, a huge favor in that regard.

Lastly, I appreciate your comparison between the YYS and YYD. I guess I'm not surprised with your thoughts at all. I love your use of the language...amazing versus sublime! Outstanding! Being that I am of the over the top in terms just wanting the best of the best, I'm glad to see that you think the D is worth it to those of us who think, well, differently.

Im loving your new addition, it should make a great contrast to your YYD. :ninja:

I've had very little time to play the new bass, but what I can say is that I was hoping for a bass that felt virtually the same as my YYD, but opened up new tonal options. There is no question this was delivered. In my hands, the bass feels entirely familiar. However the tone is entirely different and has so much range in its tonal settings that its going to take a while to explore them all. Now the fun begins!

This tandem makes total sense to me. The "entirely different" tonal range you referred to, for me anyway, is the best reason to own more than one bass. Again, I love these choices, congrats, and enjoy the exploration. :bassist:

Not that I'm prone to knee-jerk actions, but actually the Monarch may end up the odd man out. I'm kind of an anti-collector - my CDO (that's OCD but in alphabetical order) forces me to own as few instruments as possible. Right now given a choice in fretted 4 I reach for the YYD every time. That bass just slays me. The MGS will be a very different beast. The Monarch may be a bit too close to justify keeping.

Well, that and I've got a freakin' wedding coming up this summer that I have to pay for :bawl: Oh no, wait, I'm happy about that :D

you were commenting on vintage-ish vibe, i think.

Nice clips, Todd. I definitely hear the differences you mentioned in comparing each of the basses. I'm a big fan of either having both pickups on full or slightly favoring p pickup in a pj set up, and when centered, the YYD was especially impressive to my ear. Such a full, rich and complex but articulate sound.

Easy to see how you got addicted to the pj monarchs! Congrats on the heard and best of luck figuring out how to thin it.

It is interesting to listen again with the Monarch now in the mix. I have three tones that I generally go between - P pup favored (passive eq to taste if need be), 50/50 for slap, and bridge pup favored with a bit of active bass and mid added. Those recordings are just changing pan, no eq.

Keeping in mind that the strings on the YYD aren't nearly as fresh, I have to say that I find the YYS and Monarch to be closest to each other even though they have different preamps (Pope/NYC in the YYS, Pope custom shop in the Monarch). The YYD has a different sound and vibe to it. Given the setups, I'd have to attribute much of that to the body wood. I am really liking the chambered walnut and found that it sat great in a dense mix.

Right now the only thing I know is the YYD is a "to the grave" bass. Actually my fiancee said she wants it when I die (gee, thanks honey). After that I go back and forth on whether I keep the YYS or Monarch as a second bass. Or give into my CDO and just play the YYD every time I want a fretted, with the Rob Allen as a backup.
