Of course, we can do either. There is no additional charge. We are a custom shop so stuff like that is built into the pricing...

I've thought about that. Pickup placement is no small thing to move though. I played my basses acoustically quite a bit and think there's still some of the "smith" vibe pre electronics.

I think Ken also uses extremely dense, hard pieces of wood for most basses- kind of the extreme end of whatever species he's got, and that's part of the tone. A lot of dense maple, which I'm finding I don't like much beyond the neck. Also, the more multi laminate stuff seems to get more compressed sounding. He also doesn't offer a lot of combos you can get from Fodera- which is to say everything.

I think part of me doesn't see the point in fighting against what a luthier is going for, and Ken knows what he wants his basses to sounds like, and they are distinct. He has a big personality, and that is conveyed in his basses, which i can respect as an artist. Needless to say, the stuff he does is very quality and pretty impeccable. Not to mention he's incredibly knowledgable about wood and basses, including uprights- he told me a lot about my bass FS below.

Fodera has a totally different philosophy and spirit with their more collaborative approach, which for me is personally more the place I'm at with instruments. I can't wait to see how the Fodera being built for me that is a collaboration between my ideas, the dealers, and Fodera's will turn out. Hopefully it will totally sound like me coming through the bass!

Enough blathering- I'm off to play two shows of a smash broadway musical on my current Fodera!

I've had a Smith Black-Tiger for nearly 8 years ... the fingersound of that Bass was great but I really got tired of the slapsound !

But he (Ken Smith) has done sth. that many have been and are trying to find - he has designed (has or does he ever build himself ?) a sound that has become unique and recognizable on records (the slapsound for example)

Also the Fodera sound has many characteristics that you can hear - regardless who the player is (and his technique)

I have owned a number of Ken Smith basses and really liked them all, especially the 6 strings. Necks you can fly on and great Gospel and R & B tone.

One stellar Ken Smith artist that comes to mind is Melvin Davis.

Those of us here on the forum that have made Fodera basses their 1st choice instruments have done so for a wide variety of reasons, many that have already been mentioned.

Let's be gracious that we have world class luthiers and staff in Brooklyn to build the instruments we love and can't seem to get enough of.

++1. I love my Smith BT4 Serial #152 and wish it was a 5. It makes for a nice contrast to my Fodera Emp5.
