Joel -- I am interested in what you do not like about it. The instruments that we have been building with it (both Standards and Customs alike) sound really wonderful. To me it sounds tonally right between Brazilian and Ebony...what has been your experience?

What body wood? There are so few cases where I would use Pau Ferro. I may be in the minority on this thread but I really dislike that wood as a fingerboard.

Is there ANY chance Fodera will make an ES6? Same spec even, just with one more string??

nice bass. looks like it was built just for him. I don't if Jason has ever seen Tom's first Fodera. 83-84 ish timeframe, 5 string monarch, Xebrawood, with pickups from a steel pedal as there were no extended pups at the time. I am sure Joey and Vinny remember it well. i remember listening to the first album Tom used it on with the boys at the old shop and being blown away. IIRC there was a picture of the bass in the sleeve and the guys were like proud new parents...

It's always sounded much closer to Ebony than Brazilian to my ears. In fact, I hear it more between Maple and Ebony. I've seen it work well for guys who want some of the clarity of Maple but want the look of a Rosewood.

I'm sure it works great on the Standards as I suspect you guys were designing those instruments with the sum of the whole package in mind. Which really is the key to all of this stuff.

Presently we have no plans to do a 6-string Standard. For better, or worse, the Standards are intended to appeal to teh broadest audience possible and 6ers represent just around 10% of what we build. Sorry!

There WILL be one more Standard announced as part of next year's 30th anniversary celebration, but it won't be a 6er...

The E5S Tom is playing was built dead-stock. Only after Tom played for a bit did we tweak a couple of things for him...

As for his first Fodera, I have heard all about it but have never had the pleasure of seeing or playing it in person...

I'm hoping it'll be something along the lines of a Monarch deluxe 4, but I'm sure it'll be something cool in any case.

Joel - I'm with you in that all of the factors need to be considered such cases. For me Pau Ferro sounds great when used with a bolt-on instrument and ash or alder body as evidenced by my J, but it might not be the case with other woods like walnut or a neck-through design.

I'd like to see a PJ 4-string with a one piece body and no fancy wood top. Bare bones looks but killer sounding and a breeze to play.

Already have that (mostly) with the YYS. Not sure a "standard" base deluxe/elite provides enough cost savings to have it make sense over just ordering one. Then again, it depends on what they sell the most of or have the most requests for, especially, "man, I wish xxxxx were cheaper."

You've now got:

YYS (PJ4, bolt-on) $4750
E5S (DC5, bolt-on) $5750
MGS (DC5, neck-thru, 33" scale) $8750

Seems to me there is a slot for something that is between $6750-$7750. Could either be a fancy bolt-on (that is a popular spec - Imperial?) or maybe a budget Deluxe 4 or 5 string.

Dunno - I'm getting a little tapped out at this point so it better be something I don't like

True, but the YYS has a very unique look. I think they could offer the same basic package without the flame maple top and paint and have a pretty good demand. I think they would probably differentiate a little more through. Maybe with a nice set of single coils, different body and fingerboard wood.

If I bond with the MGS, I'll have a 33" scale Monarch 4 ordered up. My hands like shorter scales. Getting old sucks...
