Its still a spruce top, walnut everywhere else, including the neck.
It's good the clear yet deep sound you'd associate with walnut on a bass guitar. Slightly more distinctive sounding, and its not as harsh sounding in the upper mids like a new maple back/sides bass.
Sounds great arco or pizz as well. I think it's one of the best sounding basses I've ever heard for jazz in particular.

why do you only have 2 switches ???
No coil tap! There are Lane Poors underneath. I can't remember if I had the 2 or 4 wire pickups, but either way I never use a coil tap because side-by-side humbuckers never really sound like proper single coils (due to placement or whatever). To be honest I never use the other two switches, either- I just keep the mid selector on the "low" side and leave it be.
I don't remember asking for a switch being left out, though, so I think the pickups must've been 2 wire + shield, so a tap is impossible. But like I said, I never use the tap anyway.

Due to the Fodera/Pope preamps and the ebony 'boards, the differences are subtle, but the koa/mahogany Viceroy is a bit warmer in the mids while the maple/walnut Emperor is more refined and compressed. I imagine the neck joints play a role, too - the Viceroy is bolt-on and the Emperor is dove-tail. I had specific tone goals in mind when I ordered each one, and they both hit the mark spot-on.
The Emperor has what I imagine the "classic Fodera sound" to be, although each Fodera has its own character. The Viceroy is a little more punchy and "out there" tone-wise. Both have an articulate attack - very tight. Between the two, I don't think there's a tone I can't cop.
