It's just got a huge amount of resonance across the spectrum. Everything I like about rosewood but more clarity, mids, bottom- very open sounding.

Yes, actually. There's more high end in there then indian rosewood. I was just listening to some live clips where I slapped and was floored by how good it sounded. Actually, it sounded great for everything; I can tell how much better my Fodera sounds then other basses I've had in the studio or board recordings a ton.
Of course you still have to get the right strings. Joey also suggested to me to set the mids to Hi and then cut them a little on the Pope pre, and it's a great Marcus style slap tone.
It is a somewhat subtle wood. On first glance my bass just looks like a dark wood. When you get close or get in good light it comes to life.
Just got that one back from the shop after some surgery. It is killing. I just sold my Lull P4 since this will now be the "backup" for the YYD on certain gigs. For other shows this and the fretless 5 are the first call.

i play mostly free improv of various stripes.
fer instance playing as part of a improvised score to the silent film "metropolis" this weekend. i'll be doing fretted/fretless basses plus processing and ipad synths/samplers plus processing as my part of the ensemble. then next week bass/processing with a drummer and cornet player. like that.
october is doing a sorta jazzy post-rock tour in the southwest and then cali.
mssr nostatic has been kind enough to have me sit in with some of his things. always big fun and we seem to have a cool two-bass hookup.
I wanted her a bit more svelte. So it went back for a recarve. Was less about weight (though that was part of it), and more about the neck shape (wanted a bit less on the shoulders) and the body just a bit "less". Came out perfect. Keeper.

Do you see yourself keeping the RA long term? Will it still get lots of work moving forward?
I can't imagine what a 1/2 pound of sawdust looks like. Just taking 1 cc out of a cylinder head is a big deal.
Right now the RA is a long-term keeper. I doesn't get very much stage time, but it has a vibe that no other bass really hits. If I'm really trying to cop the upright thing, that is the bass. The Foderas cover everything else, and that includes 95% of the jazz gigs.
My typical rotation is YYD, and the 5'ers. Typically I take two instruments to a gig:
jazz gig - Fodera 5'ers, split time between fretted and fretless, though sometimes I do YYD and fretless 5
Steely Jam or rock/pop gig - YYD with fretted 5 as backup
Once the fretless 4 shows up it may change up a bit.

Just realized I took delivery of my AJ6 one year ago. The instrument is a dream come true...owning this instrument is like a once in a lifetime experience everyday. It shouldn't be missed.
