This is something I've been working on the last few years (especially since attending Bass/Nature Camp). I now try to play every song as if it is the most important tune in the world. I don't even cringe when someone calls Mustang Sally or Girl from Ipanema. In fact, I welcome the opportunity to find something new in the song.

It's all a state of mind…and easier to do when you've got a Fodera in your hands :D

the more time you spend schmoozing at the shop the less time they'll have to work on your bass.

this is something that some of my fave players do—even if i don't like the style of what they're playing, i feel that every note really matters to them.

commitment to the note and listening to everyone else intently are really important to me. i *try* to do it all the time.

the real problem with trying to play like this is playing with people who don't give a sh*t. it can really sour you on playing. it's meant that i've become very selective . . . or so i think, at least.

Could maybe share the different in sound between the classic MG wood combo (Walnut/Alder/Ash/Ebony) and your new NAMM bass
with (Ash/Alder/Ash/Ebony)

So my wife is constantly subjected to my constant playing and practicing. This morning she's says (and this after hearing a constant rotation of basses) "...those guys at Fodera are doing something special, that bass sounds amazing it's like you can really hear the wood...except your vintage instruments you shouldn't have basses other than foderas" ... Ok no problem ;)

I would suggest you work on fixing that. IMHO that's a problem, and kind of a big one.

When I'm playing a song I'm not particularly jazzed about, I make a game out of it. How can I take this lame duck and make it thump and give it life? I don't always succeed, but more often than not, it works.

As professionals, it's our job to perform as if we're the greatest group ever and the audience is the best ever even if the audience sucks, and also if the song is not one of our faves.

I also don't always succeed at that, but I try really hard, and I generally do well I think.

Too funny!

I was playing my E5S for a few minutes this morning and my wife told me that it sounded so much better than my old Fenders and she understood why I have no real interest in basses other than Fodera (ok, maybe a Nordy or Sadowsky active Jazz 5er down the road).

She also told me she would kill me if I ever sold "Martha" (my 1974 P). She bought it for me years ago. I loved it when I played it at a local store but didn't think we could afford it. She surprised me with it.

My wife emailed Jason, without my knowing it, to set up and arrange for me to be able to buy my Monarch!!! This, after I looked at a pic of it, drooled over the pic, emailed her the pic, had her email me back saying she was sorry we could not afford it, I emailed her saying that I knew that and that I just wanted to show her how beautiful it was and then...voila! She and I drove to Brooklyn the next morning to complete the adoption. And I think I may have just written the longest run-on sentence in history.
