Fodera or Fauxdera?

I think he needs to know, if for no other reason that if he ever were to try to sell it, he could be in quite a bit of legal trouble by selling it as an actual Fodera.

Well I'll leave that up to the drummer as I have no relationship with the guy. I only know of him. I don't want to come off offensive or looking prideful by telling him "mine are real and yours is not. Here let's compare and I'll show you yours is a fake." I really can't think of a good way this will go over. Again especially if he think it's real.

On another note has anyone ever played one of these? Just curious to how the quality and playability is? I have to admit not a bad price lol. I have 3 real Foderas at a cost of $14,400 each! Makes you wonder just how much does it actually cost to make a real Fodera? How much cost is actually in each instrument if China can make a fake and sell it for under $600 and still make profit? Not complaining.....just makes me ponder.
My best guess is that if you took a tour of the factory in China, which they would probably let you do if you told them you were interested in buying lots of them, that if you played 10-20 of them that you would find a keeper. This is strictly going on feel and workmanship. The pickups and preamp are of course not going to be in the same league. Give them time, the better factories have a pretty good handle on making the much simpler Fender style bolt ons.

A drummer friend just sent me a few pics of his bands bass players "Fodera" from what I can tell, it doesn’t look to be authentic but I could be wrong. I’m assuming the butterfly is covered up because he’s trying to get endorsement. Or he knows it’s a dead give away. For now the edges of the butterfly, the trussrod cover, the nut, switches, or the bridge doesn’t look right to me. I have no more pictures to go by as of now but I’ve ask him to send pics of the back when he can. Your thoughts?

Not sure if the drummer was so much calling out the bassist's fake Fodera as opposed to him telling me that the bassist in his group plays the same brand bass as me. He mentioned that it was his favorite high-end bass. I mentioned that I never saw him playing one and that's when the drummer scrolled through his phone and showed me the pics. I thought that it was fake but wasn't really for sure because it was far away so I asked the drummer to send me close up pics at their next rehearsal and here we are.

That is common for musicians seeking endorsement to cover over the logo of the gear they are playing. But my thoughts are why cover only part of it? Everyone knows what that butterfly represents just as much as everyone recognizes what the Golden Arches from McDonald's are when they see them.

Yeah. But here we are doing what?

Just out of curiosity after reading the above…

Are you involved in some sort of competition or something? You’ve got your Fodera. What do you care what somebody else plays, says they play, or even thinks they’re playing? Anybody that’s so much as slightly familiar with Fodera is going to see that bass isn’t the real deal in a heartbeat. But even so, why should anybody even care unless the current owner is trying to sell it to them?

When it's fake, when it's using ripped-off design and purporting to be a product from a world renowned brand, but it's actually a bit of Chinese firewood, surely the player must be willing to accept that they'll get stick for playing a snide.

The guys at Fodera don't work hard every day of the year to let Mr. Rolux bask in their glory for $500 (which they don't even see).

Before you say it, if the owner genuinely felt bad about playing this knock-off, wouldn't he have removed the 'Fodera' branded truss rod cover?

You sure showed that guy. All you have to do is tackle cancer.

First off I don’t consider what I said as "bashing" someone’s equipment. I said I think it’s "fake." That’s simply the truth! This is my first time coming across a fake one. In one of my post I even inquired as to how they played and sounded. Wondering if they actually compare to a real Fodera. You never saw me say his equipment is crap or sounds like garbage or anything like that. Now that would be bashing. The truth is I feel sorry for the guy. I wouldn’t want to be in that position and have to be told that what I thought was real was really fake. I made a factual statement and that’s not bashing someone’s equipment. At least not in my opinion.

Not in any completion...if I were I’d be quick to show him my Foderas and compare them. I don’t care and that’s why I’m not saying anything to him about it. I posted this to simply see if my suspicions were correct. I personally thought at first that it could of been one of there older creations where maybe they weren’t as good at building as they are now. This thread is to make other buyers aware just in case it does show up and someone thinks it’s real. Do you really think that everyone who buys a Fodera knows everything about them? I surely didn’t when I purchased my first one and that could have easily been me thinking I’m getting a good deal. People lose billions of dollars a year through scams because the thought of them getting a good deal and not just with guitars. So if I can warn my fellow tber’s....then why not? To tell you the truth this was really enlightening for me.

Fair enough. I don’t think many here might be taken in. But I suppose some might. So to your point, it’s all good. :)

Just out of curiosity, how does that thing actually sound? I always wondered about those copy basses. I have no illusions it would sound like a boutique. But is it at least workable in a band context?

For the amount of money and the reputation the brand has, I'd say a person would be asinine to purchase one without first learning as much as possible about it.

The only way this kind of scamming gains any traction is by the sheer amount people don't know about what they're purchasing.

That all sounds good but the truth is there's plenty of people who still fall to scams each year. I was just watching 20/20 poor old lady said that she'd never fall for any scam but she did and now all her savings are gone.

Hypothetically in a perfect world everyone would do their research but they don't. Especially of your new to bass.
