I do the budgeting and making sure the bills get paid. I get her anything she wants if she tells me when she needs it, but otherwise if there's room for me to get a new toy I do.

I do the budgeting and making sure the bills get paid. I get her anything she wants if she tells me when she needs it, but otherwise if there's room for me to get a new toy I do.
Mine don't complain. She seems to know the value of good instruments. It didn't hurt when she started playing Autoharp that I bought her a custom made one with a Dogwood Flower carved soundhole in it. We got married in the Smokies when the Dogwoods were in bloom. She started playing Ukulele lately and I ordered her a very nice custom $1500 one made in Hawaii. I did mention that most of basses didn't cost that much but I wanted her to have a nice one. Reverse psychology as I am now talking about ordering a Custom Warwick and she has no problems with that.
My wife has been really smart: As i already had founded my ultimate amp, she killed my GAS with buying me my ideal bass for my forty birthday. 3 years now and i'm not thinking about any other bass. 
Beyond that, as i'm realist and respectful with our income, she's really supportive but she want that we discuss it before. At the end, she often says "ok let's get it" and is happy for me. Last was this Zoom H2n to record band reaharsals two month ago.

As long as I'm not putting the budget in a tail spin it's all good.
Years ago she said "I knew you were a musician when I married you but if you ever sell all your gear we are not starting over again.
Now I only sell or trade for different gear.

My issue is not with money (thankfully) but with space.
We live in a 2 bed 2 bath apartment that's cavernous by Manhattan standards ... but quite small by "actual adult humans living on planet Earth" standards. With the two of us and a baby, there isn't much room for basses and the cases, amps, and other junk that goes with them.
My solution has been consolidating. Wanted a '66 Jazz that I've been lusting after for months: to pay for it, I traded in my '74 Jazz at the shop ($2500), put my '69 Les Paul Bass on consignment at another shop ($1800 for me), and sold my Ibanez GWB-1 here on TB ($1100 shipped).
The beauty of downsizing is you get to "go big" on the occasional dream bass.

My wife has bought me a g&l l2500, a markbass combo, and a bunch of other pedals and stuff. What a cool chick. I admittedly was sleeping on the couch for a few days after buying my mesa stack. Totally worth it.
Definitely true for us. I have the utmost respect for single parents who not only do it, but do it well. I really don't know how they do it.
My Berg cab was delivered yesterday and I was still at work. She texted me a picture of the box and was so happy. I was short a few hundred till I sold off my other rig, she said " you deserve it and Here use my card for the balance" so I was able to order it. She is in the front row at every gig and helps me pack up after the show. We both split the household bills and still have independent bank accounts. This makes for a great relationship where money is never a factor and we help each other out when needed, I never complain about her $300 haircut and color and can buy gear when I can afford it. I will use my sweetwater card for 0 % and always pay it off before any interest hits. She let me display the Berg in the living room ( for now) and commented on how she can tell it's a quality cab. We are getting married next year after 10 years together. She is my #1 fan.
Wow I just read this thinking "is he writing my biography here or what?!" We just got married after 10 years together, she's my best roadie and biggest fan, and we handle money/bills the same way!
