Seems it's usually the good solid players are the ones you never hear about, but they sure add to a band's sound. Schermie's playing was one of the best parts of Three Dog Night.

I would add to the list Ray Parker of Raydio and solo fame. I very much liked "A Woman Needs Love" bass line.
Hmmm, Bill Black, anyone? Played on few records that changed the course of history, sorta. Fernando Saunders(along with Mick Karn)are two non-Jaco-influenced fretless wizards that should have gotten wider recognition. JJ Burnell is a monster in the Entwistle/Wetton Brit grindy twangy sound tradition. Phil Chen was not only an encyclopedia of funk/rock lines on Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow, but was also an architect of Ska/Reggie bass. I don't think I saw Louis Johnson mentioned, either.
Oh, man, you just made me dust off some cobwebs! Didn't know Ray played bass on that.
The Ray Parker thing reminded me of another artist from that era. Michael Henderson had serious chops and played with some of the most successful/respected R&B and jazz artists of all time. And "Wide Receiver" was the s**t. 
I saw Randy 3 times with Jeff Beck, and he was incredible each time.

"Going to My Hometown" by Rory Gallagher on Live in Europe is a good example of Gerry McAvoy IMO. It's just Rory, Gerry, and a drummer (Wilgar Campbell) doing it all on that tour.
Known among some jazz fans, but unknown by far, far too many: Scott LaFaro.

Armistead Burwell Smith IV (also known as Zach Smith). If you've never heard of him, have a look on Wikipedia and then go straight on YouTube. Maybe he's not a forgotten hero, I wish he'd be a hero for someone though.
