FIA violated their own rules regarding restarts: F1 sporting Regulation 39.12. They failed to let ALL lapped cars unlap themselves. And they failed to wait an additional lap after allowing lapped cars past.
I hope Merc takes this to CAS ( Court of Arbitration for Sport) if necessary.

They've aready protested the result and like you I think they have a very strong case. Apparently F1 needs competition cautions, lucky dogs, and green-white-checkers, LOL.

I'm really regretting giving F1 another chance this year. It is less if a sport now than it was when I mostly stopped watching 7 or 8 years ago. I hope not to make the same mistake again.
I’m new to the F1 world, dragged in by the Netflix series.
can I just ask why in the world would they allow this to even be possible in the first place? A soccer match adds extra minutes to make up for the downtime accrued throughout the match. Why would F1 allow the last 10% of the match, which is theoretically the most crucial/clutch/exciting part of the match, to just get pissed away behind a safety car? Why would they not add 5 extra laps to the race to make up for the lost laps when their race should be at its most exciting.
do whatever you need from a safety perspective, limit the number of laps you can add, give everyone a set of provisional tires only accessible in such a situation, whatever you need to do to keep the drivers safe. Just a total joke that they’d let the entire season be decided under these circumstances.

Cars are fueled to barely make it to the end. They can't tack on laps because there is no mechanism to refuel the car (refuelling during the race is banned).
This feels like a super lame excuse. They change the cars every year. They can’t add 10% more capacity to the fuel tank. Weak sauce.
I don't really follow NASCAR as closely as I used to but I think that's the concept behind the "overtime" laps. Crash toward the end of the race and rather than have the race end and be decided under caution, they tack on a couple of laps to let the drivers actually race to the checkered flag.
I don't watch nascar at all, and new to F1. Just can't believe anyone would want to watch an entire season decided by a guy in last place crashing into the wall 6 laps before the race is over. It's a complete joke that should be fixed.
Two racers going into the last race completely tied, winner take all. The only drama was the fact that controversial decisions and stupid rules that ruin the competitive spirit interfered in what could have been an incredible finish. I can't think of any other sport that takes the competition and the ultimate outcome away from the competitors on the field, at any point, let alone at the most critical junction of the season.
So much to say... wowzers. 
Latifi's incident -- what an odd place for anyone to crash, especially at the end of the race when he had little at stake. Certainly makes one wonder.
And yes, it's ironic that a Mercedes-powered car brings out a caution that in wins Max (with Honda) the title over Lewis (in the factory Mercedes).
If these were the old days of F1, today's race would've finished under yellow and everyone would've cried over the next couple of months about what a boring finish we had.
But...
I believe Michael Masi rushed things today just to have the race not finish under caution... and in the process, what we were handed wasn't pretty and left many people confused and saying, "Whaaaaa???" Not just today... or last weekend... or Brazil... but throughout the 2021 season, Masi has shown he's in a little over his head. One of the things I really like about IndyCar and MotoGP is you don't have as many controversial finishes and the viewers are comfortable with the decisions being made as they believe they are sound and just. I can't say that about today's F1.
As Jenson Button said in the post-race commentary, the team bosses shouldn't be allowed to buzz into race control and plead their case in the middle of an event. This needs to stop.
Regarding the chatter in this thread about extending the race and adding fuel in such unique situations like today, no, no, no, no, no. For years, the rules in F1 have not included refueling and it's likely not going to change. That's that. Serious motorsports series across the planet don't add "stoppage time" to races to make up for laps under yellow and they shouldn't. Go watch soccer if you want to see that kinda stuff... they'll give you a regular supply of guys rolling around on the ground, faking injuries to boot.
Overall, a heckuva season and we should all be happy we were around to take it in. F1 is riding an exciting wave in terms of spectatorship, especially with the new fans brought on by the Netflix show. Max winning the title does more to help those fresh viewers keep watching instead of seeing Lewis and the Mercedes juggernaut continue to roll.
I'd love to send a message to the F1 team principals and drivers and ask that we all see less of their whining and more, "Things didn't go our way today -- we'll get 'em next time." F1 needs this as it's bordering on a reality show.
I'm geeked about the '22 car. If any of you have watched F2 lately, you gotta agree the bigger wheels and lower profile tires look sharp. The simpler aero package up top and the return of engineering on the undertray will both be sweet changes that should provide for better action on the track. Stuff to look forward to, for sure.

Nico got his title in '16, so it wasn't consecutive for Lewis... but he's been nothing but impressive since showing up on the scene.
And although Toto about blew a gasket today, happy to see Hamilton's class after today's race. Max could learn a thing or two from that.

Yeah, right. How could I have forgotten that given Nico was commenting all day, today?
Max may be a bit too agressive at times, but he is doing the sport (IMO) a favor as he is a lot like "old school" race drivers who just wants to get on with the job and race.

Sure sure, letting a guy who's not even in the competition dictate the outcome of the season is a great idea. I'm not suggesting refueling. I'm suggesting they start with some small amount of emergency fuel, and if there's a reason for stoppage time in the last 10 or so laps of the race, they add 5 laps onto the end. I wouldn't do it for stoppage time in the middle of the race where there's theoretically plenty of time for the actual racers to affect the outcome of the race. I think there are literally 10's of millions of fans around the world who thought the way the race ended was total bush league. Again, a guy who's basically in last place completely changing the outcome of not just the race but the season because he gets into an accident is completely ridiculous.
Hamilton was more than 10 seconds ahead with like 6 laps to go when the stoppage put Max right behind him with fresh tires. You literally couldn't write a more bull poopie ending if you tried.
I'm interested in seeing the best man win. Max had a great season and hats off to him. But he wasn't the best man today by a long shot and he was given a huge unfair advantage because of a knucklehead move by someone of absolutely no consequence, you know, until he completely changed the outcome of the season.
And there's no way in a sport as dangerous as F1 you're going to see a bunch of "flopping" like you see in soccer. Nobody is going to take their car into a wall at 100mph to somehow help out a teammate. Anything less than a serious crash and the car will be back on its way at least until it can get out of the way.
