i play a five out of necessity, wish i could play on a four, but we're tuned to low A
Fender's never exactly been known for making good 5ers, though... I'd say asking Ibanez or MusicMan would be a better barometer...

If you believe that 4, 5, and 6 string basses have different timbres, then perhaps the sax comparison is appropriate. I don't.
What's wrong with alternate tuning? I can tune down to B and still walk the neck as far as I need to. I've also noticed most fives I've messed with were just lacking something in the tone department. I'll stick with four string.
It seems to me that a great number of big players rely on 4 string basses as their workhorses, I can't see that changing. Having a 5th string can be handy but a low "B" often has a timbre that doesn't always jive with the other strings. Many makers also seem to think that 35" scale is key to a good sounding "B" string where I don't find that this is necessarily true and really don't care for the feel of the added tension. I can play a 19mm spaced 35" 5er but I hate the feel.
I love my 4 string basses when playing out. They are lighter weight and feel faster in my hands, they practically play themselves. When I go from 5 to 4 I feel like I'm flying. I think 4 string basses will always be a staple.
Seems like it to me. I can't say if they'll ever go "extinct" but I don't see anyone playing them around where I live. And beyond that it seems like most custom builders are building many more fives than fours. What say you, TB?
I never saw the need for a 5 string other than the advantage of not having to move about the fretboard as much without changing left hand position. Other than that it's 5 lower versions of notes that are already available on a 4 string. Am I missing something?
I'm mainly a 4 string player. 5's are nice but will never replace 4's...unless nu-metal becomes the only form of music![]()
