As has been said elsewhere, it just takes practice to develop the muscle memory. Double and triple stops helped me.

There's also the compromise of lower profile frets. Lee Sklar famously uses banjo fretwire on his basses. Dingwall and others offer it as an option.

You still get the "woody" feeling of the fingerboard under your fingers.

I'm a lined-fretless guy myself, but like the OP, I find myself having a hard time with frets now. While they certainly making chording and big jumps more precise... I'm just not comfortable with them anymore.
