Friend slams band on facebook

Honestly, I'll say that your singer is a better guitar player, than a singer. Take it for what it is.........it's all based on 2 videos on youtube. He makes the songs sound a bit "hokey", with his approach to the vocals.... I'm not gonna say the vocals are "horrible", but there's always room for improvement.

It sounds to me that your "friend" just isn't very tactful.

While I haven't taken the time to listen (I'm at work), I will say that I fully support his telling you his opinion. Come on, we're surrounded by advertising companies, salespeople, bureaucrats and politicians - hemmed in on all sides, as it were, by professional liars. What the heck are friends for, if not to speak the truth?

That said (even though I'm an outspoken and opinionated jerk myself), he ought to have found a more private way to make his sentiments known.

That also being said, it is possible (as somebody already mentioned) that he thought he was being private. I can't claim to be very good at navigating Facebook either anymore.

listened to the songs.

The vocal tracks are totally dry. (just an opinion).. I'd be back tracking to the video production and getting some type of studio recording...

sounds like they plugged into a monitor mix - not FOH.. or you had a poor sound guy.

-------

it is pretty ghetto to fire you up on your facebook page.

It causes more harm than good.. I know some marriages that have been affected by friends... I use it to Email only.

My wife thinks I should have posted this one instead. Same night. Do you think it was just the style of singing on the first song that made my friend comment like that?

Your wife is half right, you should have posted both. It is, as you say, the style of singing on the first song that made your friend comment like that. The singing on this is fitting. That first track did not work vocally.

I hear what you are saying but would be better to say it person to person, in private....but on your fb wall where ALL of your other friends can see?

So did all of your other friends chime in and and say it's not so?

If not, then maybe they're not as good friends as you thought they were, or the other guy was right :D

If they did pipe up and say it ain't so, then that sounds about just right to me. People will never agree on these things...just mention Jaco around here and see what happens. ;)

IMO, It was just the facts and politely put with no slams and he did say "honestly". A little story: My buddies are in one of the most popular, high paid cover bands in the NY Capitol area with 150-200 gigs a year for several years now - they make a good living off it....but they SUCK bad. Real bad. The funny thing is they are all highly talented musicians and one even has a Grammy Award! (from the band Petra). Even my kids and wife (who really know their music) said "we gotta leave" at an all ages 4th of July gig. MY POINT is that I have no problem telling my friend that his band sucks, probably because he brags so much about his band, or I might not say anything at all. "Hey come out and see us, we are blah blah blah" - no thanx bud

I thought the band - singer and all - sounded fine. I've heard WAY worse that's for sure. Yeah, the vocals were a little dry, the mix, yada, yada, yada. It can always be better but I wouln't be ashamed to post that with my name on it.

As for the Facebook thing....unfortunately, that's the way we seem to be going right now. I don't know what happened to face to face conversation, but I sure miss it sometimes. Get a thicker skin or don't post stuff online. Not sure how else to handle it.

On a tangent - I hate how anonymous you can be online. For example, typically if you write a "letter to the editor" it won't be printed unless you sign it. Yet for the online version of the paper, you can be joe blow 34. Takes free speech to a bad place. Cyber bullying, cyber stalking, etc., would all take a big hit if you had one online "personality" and it had to be your real name. Of course, that would put cyber porn out of business.

Given this statement he might feel that this is the kind of friendship that you guys have and he thought it would be okay to rib you or badger you on FB like you guys do in person.
Still not very cool but you did post it and should take it for what it is,my wife and kids have'nt liked any of my singers but other people do so I don't stress on it.
Yeah, he's not a musician but he, another friend of mine and myself get together occasionally to tie one on and we listen to alot of music. Of course we all argue over who gets to pick the next song. He's a big fan of Bob Seger, Thin Lizzy, and Molly Hatchet while I like Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead and the other friend likes harder stuff like some psychobilly, punk, Volbeet, and a few others that the first friend never heard of and so it gets interesting.

I have some pretty stupid friends that would do something like that. Its not that they're mean.... theyre just seriously stupid. As in they have the social tact of 4th graders. Maybe he's just a total flake and didnt even consider who else would be looking at that comment.

Well I think the bass sound on the first song is intentional...I was using a bass octaver effect for that song. They had me mic'd and DI and so I'm hoping the FOH sounded better because I noticed on the second video I posted I was a little distorted even on the slow blues number which I'd rather have a smoother tone on.

"""So wait....you said you would leave the bar if you heard them? I mean, that bad?"""

I meant to say; "I would not leave the bar". Sorry to be misleading!:bassist:
