Friend slams band on facebook

Yes that is the friend that I was referring to.

Yeah, he's not a musician but he, another friend of mine and myself get together occasionally to tie one on and we listen to alot of music. Of course we all argue over who gets to pick the next song. He's a big fan of Bob Seger, Thin Lizzy, and Molly Hatchet while I like Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead and the other friend likes harder stuff like some psychobilly, punk, Volbeet, and a few others that the first friend never heard of and so it gets interesting.

Me thinks you may need to thicken your skin a bit. Why do you care if your pal doesn't like your singer? I've had countless friends hate countless singers I've played with. :)

What do you think of your singer?

By the way, although the main issue was about him posting it on my wall, I appreciate what you were saying here. I like his singing. But you know when you're in an original band for a while, my experience is that you get into a certain mode of thinking and so I do like an outside perspective once in a while, like some have given in this thread.

Just curious, if he said it to you in person, would it have been ok? Honestly, if you don't want criticism, don't put it out there. I don't see how putting it on your facebook wall is any different than saying straight to you, aside from the fact that any actual "friends" in your friends list could see it. Sure, anyone can read it, but anyone could over hear it too. If I was your friend IRL and I thought your singer sucked, I'd tell you. I will grant you that it is a bit tactless to just throw it out there like he did, but if all he said was "Truthfully.....need a new lead singer", then at least he wasn't insulting you. The truth hurts sometimes, and there are tactless people in the world, I guess. If it bugged you, just ask him to PM (or privately tell you if in person) the next time he has something similar to say. Problem solved.

But the bottom line really is: if you don't want to be criticized, don't do anything to be criticized for.

Edit: I liked your singer, though. Better than some others I can think of in major label signed bands. Just my $.02.

The first song you posted something was off. I cant pinpoint it I think the singers voice was just off or maybe he wasnt warmed up. But the other songs were pretty good. Not exactly my style but not bad at all. I think your friend was in the wrong posting on facebook but hey whats the internet for? hiding behind your computer and talking crap about everyone.

What if you got some coverage in a newspaper or online blog or something? You better believe people will be lining up to scrutinize your band from heads to toes. I agree with Joe Nerve, if you found it offensive you need to 'thicken up your skin a bit'.

Bottom line, if you don't want to be criticized, don't do anything to be criticized for.

Yes, if he had said it to me in person, in private, I'd be fine with that. I would have told him what I thought and responded, but I'd be fine with it.

doh! you got a-holt of it before i was done editing it to sound more better like : P

So, did you tell him "not cool dude, pm me next time" and all was well? Or does this continue to be an issue between you two?

LOL....you're post above made me laugh. It's cool.

Yeah, I did pm him and tell him that friends don't post stuff like that on other friend's walls but in retrospect I like the way you worded it above better. This won't continue to be an issue. He's got opinions on other musical subjects we've discussed and sometimes I don't get it. I'll go over his house on a man cave night, drink some beers, talk **** to him and we'll be fine.

Oh man, so you're saying that there are haters online? AND they like leaving comments? :hiding:

Seriously, I think it's good to have harsh music critics review what you do as a musician. There are so many people out there trying to do what you're doing, you need people out there to be real with you as far as your sound, your playing who you play with. I would consider the source. I really don't listen AT ALL to people with poor taste in music. I BARELY listen to critical music snobs and I listen VERY closely to people who are actually at the level I want to be at as a musician/artist.

As far as this guy goes, yeah he's a tactless dick. My band once got a placement on a CW show so I posted the episode and my "friend" criticized it because he thought Melrose Place was a stupid show. I chewed him out in a FB message and as it stands, he knows where the line is.

Sounds fine to me.

Real friends are not displayed on imaginary "walls" like deer heads, and real friends don't offer "constructive criticism" in the form of semi-anonymous postings over the internet. That's just me, but if someone slammed my band on facebook, I would be really angry, because I would have no idea how a recording of my band got on facebook.
