back in those days Rodney Curtis was playing fretted SD Curlee basses that had dual P pickups. What gave that bass its unique sound is you can switch the pickups to parallel mode instead of series. It sounds like he's using the bridge pickup with a little bit of neck pickup blended in. That tone can be heard on Groovalliegance, Motor Booty Affair, and I'll Be With You
