Funky NATO names for Soviet aircraft

Yeah, I highly recommend going to the museum if you get the chance. It's free to get in, and most of the tours are self-guided. So you can spend all the time ogling the planes that you want. The XB70 is magnificent, and worth the whole trip. Get there early though and sign up to go over the R&D building. They've moved all the X planes and presidential aircraft to their own hangar on the active base; the buses fill up fast!

Thanks- I'm pretty unsure on the B-47; the wing tanks say yeah but the wings on those guys drooped more than in the pic(when parked)IIRC

That's a Fairchild C-123 Provider next to the MiG-21.

Talking about great aircraft that never made production, these two like the Valkyrie would have been NATO aircraft in the late 60s and through the 70s. Both of these were cancelled in interesting circumstances, with cost being the main reasons, but the conspiracy theorists talk bring up the issue that both would have been technologically more advanced than anything the USAF had at the time!

Yeah, I've still got it, but I tend to leave it hanging between April & September.
On topic- IIRC, the U2, at altitude, was in a very narrow window between stall speed(which could result in a dive to thicker air, likely resulting in ripping the wings off during pullout)& flameout due to low oxygen content. Or some such schizz- I read a good account by a former pilot(Black Watch..?)but it's been awhile.

Stall speed increases as air gets less dense, so any aircraft flying at high altitude has to deal with that narrowed window of usable airspeed. Where that window narrows to practically nil is the service ceiling. I don't recall what the U2's ceiling is. A stall that results in a dive might probably be somewhat preferable to a tumbling stall.

I agree with this -- I simply cannot believe they retired the SR-71 without SOMETHING to fill it's role. (And I'm not buying that satellite-only hogwash, either!)

Also -- I have to do a quick hijack show some love for the mention of one of the coolest planes I ever heard of. I hate that this lady never made it into the arsenal ...

Considering the massive deal everyone makes about how the F22 has supercruise, I still like to remind myself about how the TSR-2 was doing that 40 odd years ago.
What a plane that would have been, had the government not pulled the plug at the last minute.
