Edit: A brief google search(& briefer skim)tells me it's the Tupolev entry in the competiton for what would have been named Blackjack had it been produced- correct?

Nope. It's a Sukhoi T-4, the Soviet answer to the XB70.

Tupolev TU160 Blackjack went into production and is currently in service. It resembles a B1 Lancer but it much larger:

I remember seeing these in East Germany (when the wall was still up) flying overhead. These were some noisy suckers! These were also the helicopters in Red Dawn that took out Patrick Swayze's girl when she was on her horse.

I'm guessing an all-weather reconnaissance aircraft. That's what the F-4 Phantom became after the Vietnam War (which is what replaced the Demon). It also became an electronic warfare aircraft.
