Which was a shame, but in the grand scheme of things, I'd (almost) rather have faster, more economical planes than majestic, beautiful pieces of engineering art...

Yup- GOD what a load of propellers. I cannot IMAGINE what that sounded like.
aahhhhh, I can't remember what they're called, there was an excellent documentary on them a number of years back. Most of the engines were just to get them to take off. Is it called hydroplaning? something like that?

There are two different planes there. One is by Convair, the other by Lockheed.
