Future Impact now available!! WAS: deep impact reissue!!! interested?

Wait - is the only way to connect to the FI midi? So if I don't have a midi connection on my puter, I need to buy a midi-interface? No USB connections? And we are talking about a connection to upload presets or manipulate them right?

Short answer: yes

Hey guys. I'm totally ignorant to the whole midi thing, and I have a question..please be nice... Would something like this work..allowing me to utilize the midi functionality of the FI or would I need a legit midi controller?

shopping.jpg MIDISPORT 2x2 is a two-in, two-out, USB Midi interface for Windows and Macintosh. If you have more than just one keyboard or sound module, or more than one controller, the 2x2 is perfect. Since it is powered by the USB port, the 2x2 is convenient and great for laptop use

Edit: I have about 12 of these I scored at a college computer lab remodel...and would be willing to " help" anyone out that needed one... Obviously I don't even know what it's for. But they looked like maybe I could make a buck off them

You could probably use the Midisport... There was a list of supported devices earlier in the thread.

...
And btw - mine is going to be available as soon as I get it as I need money for something else. PM me if interested. But the price will be the same you get through Panda midi and no trades.

That was fas...

Totally didn't think you'd be first for the flip, and you don't even have it yet! Or are you just joshin' 'round?

As Adam pointed out, yes to your questions that I deleted from your quote. Deleted 'cause I'm blown away you're already flipping it. You should charge more for this future collector's item...

...And do you need both the midi input and the output? Or can you just hook the input? (Planning a MIDI-reshuffle of my board here)

I'm only speculating here, I think lokki and Andras have said a few things and there might be more info in the documents that Andras posted. It might depend on what you're doing? Like, for full patch loading or firmware updates you might need to read from the pedal in addition to writing to it. But maybe some can be done with just an input to the pedal?

Like Feral said, I don't see why that wouldn't work---it is at least the right class of interface that we're talking about, but compatibility can be tricky with these things. In those documents that Andras posted there was a non-exhaustive list of interfaces that did and didn't work. The only M-Audio unit listed worked, so I'm hoping my UNO will.

Sorry if I am asking a question that has been asked a million times.

you need one midi connection to edit a sound and you can also save one sound at a time to the future impact with only one cable. if you want to write all presets in one run, you need both cables, since the editor has to know, when the f.i. is ready for the next file.

right, you need a midi interface.

Please don't in any way take this badly but would it have been so hard to add a USB connection? It would seem to open up possibilities for many of us that aren't so comfortable with Midi.

@lokki - all the sounds you have posted so far were created with the editor right? Those were beyond killer. To me those are the real attraction - not the Deep Impact sounds (no matter how cool those are).

So no midi = no killer lokki sounds?

Well I can't speak for the design decision, but this wouldn't actually require you to learn any MIDI. MIDI is the connection and the protocol, but no MIDI programming would be required---just using the graphical interface. However, it is an extra expense to have the right adapter.

about the usb port: in short, yes it would have been harder to add one :) there would have had been a chip more (for the usb decoding i believe) and the costs would have been considerably higher. the other option would have been not to include midi in and out and only usb. but i think midi in and out makes more sense on stage.

most of my "killer" presets (thank you!!) are already preprogrammed on the future impact. but for new sounds you will have to load them into the editor and send them via midi, yes. but it is really not that much of learning. most midi devices will not need a driver and can just be plugged in via usb. the presets will be sent via the midi cable, you only have to move the sliders, you don't have to know anything about it...

If it had to be a choice - I see why midi was chosen over USB. That makes absolute sense.

Re - presets - provided yours are already in there, that would be more than enough for me. I have never been particularly successful at programming decent presets (Roland Gr-55 and Eventide H9 i'm looking at you). So the lack of useable presets on the H9 still frustrates the crap out of me. That doesn't look like it's going to be an issue here.

@Feral Feline - the early season in Jackson has been brutal on my wallet and sources of easy capital are very attractive right now. That said, I will definitely plug it in before flipping it, and that probably means it's not going far. ;)

That Roland Midi, in the works perfectly pile, is like $40 new. Not a bad option. Says it works with Windows/ Mac/ and IOS. Now we just need an iOS editor.

This looks like it would be easy enough on an iPad

Wish I knew how to program.

I'm at a loss here, really hoping my M-Audio UNO will work. Does anyone have a link for the document Andras posted with the will/won't work units?

They only tested a few units. The ones that are less likely to work have small buffer sizes and either don't handle Sysex at all or don't handle it well. I would assume yours works until you discover otherwise. Here is Andras's post:

This is the doc how to do a software upgrade, when a next version will be available. The current one is 1.00. The doc contains the list of usable and unusable MIDI interfaces.
