Hey Folks,

Is it normal to have the FI retain the previous notes pitch so when a new note is played, there is a quick portamento to the new pitch? Nothing I have tried seems to remove this issue?

A couple things to try:
1. Check the input level.
2. Is there lingering noice that fools the FI to belive that the string is still moving ?

No to either unfortunately. This behaviour is consistent across all my basses, active / passive, level inputs checked etc. If I play a clean top G on the G string, then wait a few seconds, then a clean lower F on the E string, I can hear the pitch drop from the G to the F. But then on subsequent repeats of the F, the note is clean. Seems the pitch tracker is laggy.

Is that the default behaviour ?

It’s a deliberate design feature which speeds up response time as a note will trigger as soon as movement is detected but before the pitch has been read.

I finally pulled the trigger on one of these. I’m hoping to use my Helix Floor to be able to scroll through patches/presets.

What I’d like to do is dedicate one footswitch on the Helix to go up one preset at a time, and one footswitch to go down one preset at a time (with each press of the switch). I’d just turn the FI on or off via it’s footswitch.

Does that sound doable, for someone who’s fairly new to midi?

It took me about 12 minutes, 3 tweaks, to make this work. I have one preset in my HXFX with four switches set to specific presets, and two set to scroll up/down.

Yes, exactly. As a practical matter, usually when you play quickly subsequent notes then they are just a few semitones apart from each other, and you will not notice this glitch, while the response is very fast, which is very important.

I can appreciate the limitation of the physics of the length of the waveform at those lower frequencies and determining pitch takes time. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt doing something wrong with my configuration.

I am really enjoying your pedal. The synthesis engine is alot of fun and, to my ears, sounds amazing!

This detection method definitely improves things in most situations. It does become a bit more apparent when playing octave leaps (a common bass technique). Where it really struggles sometimes is when using pitch as a mod source; one of the factory patches is a kick drum and snare sound and when one alternates between the two sounds by playing notes quite far apart, the attack of the kick drum is spoiled.

Ideally one would be able to have two detection modes, the current one and one where note triggering only occurs when the pitch has been detected and the choice stored per patch. However, given the limitations of code space etc, the current implementation gives the best results in most situations so is a wise choice.

Glad you are enjoying it, it really is great. If you have a sequencer or MIDI keyboard, try hooking that up to it.

My FI was from the first batch and gig three weekends a month and use it on every one, and I haven't done any updates and it works great.

I wish there was a small scroll switch like what I have for my Whammy made for the FI.

OMG, you really need to update your firmware to v3.60 as the new features are AMAZING. You can still use all your old sounds. Note, if you’ve made any changes to the sounds on the pedal either by loading new ones on there or by using the onboard parameter edit controls, then you’ll need to make a note of these before updating as you’ll have to flush them from the memory temporarily.

If you don’t have a backup of any custom files then you’d need to do an interim update to the last v2 version and use the transfer function to pull the files off the pedal before updating to v3.60. (If everything is already backed up, then you can simply install the v3.60 firmware and the v3.50 factory soundset (you MUST do both otherwise the pedal will not function correctly).)

I need foot buttons; think vegas type show sets where we play non-stop. I dont have the free hands or time to crouch down to turn by hand.

I don't have a pc or laptop so can't do any updates. Maybe when I take a vacation I can ship it or find a local FI owner that can.

Fair enough. You can double-press the program button to go down. Something like a Morningstar MC-3 would work really well.

The update can be done on iOS using the web MIDI browser app, providing you have an interface that you can hook up to your phone (so something like a Roland UM-One MK2 and an Apple camera connection kit) but that would only let you write the factory patches on as part of the update - you wouldn’t be able to use it to put your own patches on it. So sounds like finding someone with a PC or Mac would be good.

Definitely possible using the computer app- you can tweak and re-save any preset to any location (all the presets are sounds created using the same basic building-blocks that you have access to all of in the app)

If you have the editor installed, just use the manager to populate the tiles with multiple instances of those patches and then tweak some to your liking and send the results to the pedal (worth saving to the computer too).

The aux switch with the up , down and page are for the MC6. The MC6 controls the future impact along with all my other pedals. The MC6 is also controlling a Morningstar ML5 midi switcher that is mounted under my board. That’s used for switching my analog pedals. This board has been completely redone and everything is now on a Rockboard . I will put new pics up whe I get a chance.

As @Quatschmacher said the Morningstar MC3 would do the trick.

And it will easily fit right on top of your TREX Fuel Tank power supply.
