Everything is going well. Still really busy at work and I'm sad to report that I haven't really played at all. My band broke up after Covid. I guess after a 30+ year run it was time, and Covid gave it the little push to end it. As you know I was so busy during Covid and really didn't pick up my bass at all. I think since March 2020, I may have picked up my bass about 10 to 20 times. Sad.. I know... At some point I'll get back to it, I'm sure of that. At least I have my FI up to date, just haven't had the chance to experiment with it. I downsized my pedalboard too.... A lot. I gave my old pedalboard to my son. Here is my compact setup..

I'm always lurking around these parts to keep up with what is going on, and to see how all my fellow TB'ers are doing.

It took me about 12 minutes, 3 tweaks, to make this work. I have one preset in my HXFX with four switches set to specific presets, and two set to scroll up/down.

Took me about 20 minutes, but I’ve got my Helix scrolling through the presets, both up and down, and turning the FI on and off. Works perfectly, with one minor hiccup that I’ve gotta work out: When I switch presets on the Helix, it turns the FI on and off. Must be something I’m overlooking….

Plug the whole setup into midimonitor.com and you’ll probably find that the helix is spitting out CC66 or CC69, which toggle engage and bypass. Or it might be that sending a program change engages the preset (I can’t remember off the top of my head).

There’s always something for us midi amateurs. My first scroll command sent the FI into a rapid endless scroll.

Happened to me too, until I realised I needed to send the relevant CC at 0 upon release.

Same here, lol!! But I was pretty dang proud of myself when I figured out the solution to that little mess-up.

Probably because those CCs have a function within helix. I’m presuming you currently have helix and FI on the same channel. When helix sends out MIDI PC messages, does it do so only on its channel or on all channels? If the latter, you could set the two devices to different channels. Without a display of all the Helix MIDI menu options, I can’t help much more.

New FI user. Long time lurker. Doing a pedal board planner. Can anyone recommend a similarly sized pedal since future impact is not in the pedal train database.

Question for the superusers: in many of the stock sounds (3.60), the -1 octave clearely fades out around C# to D on the A string, making it not even reach as low as a regular fiver. Is there a setting for the HP filter? I have not used the editor yet, and will need to buy a new laptop for that...
For some other sounds, the -1 will easily go to third fret G on the E string.

Edit: my rig is easily capable of dealing with loud and deep bass, and other pedals will go deeper.

Have you installed the driver for the UM-One? It’s on the Roland website. Once installed, it will appear in the MIDI>preferences menu.

Yep, it shows up on the midi preferences on the editor.

In which case, it should work just fine.

Select the Um-one as the OUTPUT DEVICE and the FI INPUT DEVICE.

After doing so, when moving sliders in the editor, do you see the MIDI activity light flashing on the UM-one?

Make sure the MIDI OUT of FI is plugged into MIDI IN of the interface; MIDI OUT of the interface is plugged into MIDI IN of FI. It’s easier to see using the arrows on the UM-One plugs.

When connected, there should be two horizontal lines in the FI’s display. (You may need to move a slider etc in the editor first so the FI responds to a message. Navigate patches using the editor (not the pedal’s buttons).

Yup - first time I tried connecting my FI to my puter it turned out I had the the plugs in the wrong jacks on the FI. It's nice to know I'm not the only one!

It does make sense - you need to remember what function the interface serves, namely being MIDI ports for your computer, so the cable’s MIDI IN port is for the signal coming FROM the external device going INTO the computer. So you connect the MIDI OUT port from your external device to the MIDI IN port of the interface.

If you’re in a pinch layout-wise, I’d substitute the Akai Deep Impact (the “mother” of the FI) in the pedalboard planner, but note that the Akai *is* slightly larger than the FI (Akai = 175x140x41mm; FI = 155x125x65mm). So, although not a perfect match, it’ll get you in the ballpark and you can continue with your layout work (semi-pro tip: to avoid losing your mind later, leave yourself some wiggle room on the board when planning your layout). Good luck!
