Oh in that case I could probably do without legacy mode. I use MIDI, primarily. I may be stuck on legacy mode but would be happy with normal operation.

I am surprised this will save enough space to enable anything of consequence, however...

I've ordered my patches so they're grouped together, don't need legacy mode due to that.

I mainly use legacy mode. It's the fastest way to go from eg: 12 to 87, or maybe I'm too used to it

How is it faster in Legacy mode?

in Direct mode you’d press the Program button 5 times and the Bank button 7 times and you’re there. Or press and turn the Bank dial to quickly scan to 87.

In Legacy mode, there’s an extra step of pressing the On/Off switch to load the patch.

Just wanted to check you’ve understood what Legacy mode is. The difference between Legacy and Direct mode is about how the program footswitch behaves: whether pressing it loads the patch directly (Direct) or whether it merely cues the patch (Legacy).

The Bank button will still increment banks as it always has. It’s behaviour is the same in both modes.

How does it work when it isn’t in legacy mode? I had a deep impact, so I must have changed the FI to function the same a long time ago. Now I only use midi to control it.

DIRECT/LEGACY PROGRAM-SELECTION MODE ("PrG")Value: 0 (DIRECT), 1 (LEGACY). (Default on reset is 0.)

• DIRECT Mode is the default setting for selecting a sound. Sounds are selected with the PROGRAM footswitch. Press to move up by one; double-press to move down by one. Hold down the footswitch after pressing or double-pressing to scroll. Moving up or down through the programs will step over the bank borders so that you can access any of the 99 programs using just the one footswitch. The numbers wrap around.
• In LEGACY Mode, the PROGRAM footswitch functions as above except that moving up or down does not step over the bank borders; banks can only be changed using the BANK Dial. Furthermore, pressing the PROGRAM footswitch will only cue the next program but will not engage it; the number in the pedal's LCD will change and start to blink but the sound will not yet change. You must press the ON/OFF footswitch to activate the selected sound. In this mode, the numbers also wrap around, albeit within a single bank.
  We highly recommend using DIRECT mode as it is much more practical than
  LEGACY mode.

You’d be surprised. We squeezed quite a lot from very little in v3.5.

if nothing else, the recovered space may be able to remove some artefacts in certain use cases (such as when modulating delay line times via the mod matrix).

Or perhaps allow a dedicated CC for master octave transposition, which I’ve been asking for for years.

Let’s see. So far the consensus seems to be that Legacy mode can be removed.

The legacy setting sounds like it was best for the Deep Impact that only had 9 sounds. I liked how I could step through the DI presets when playing, then engage the sound after it was all queued up. Gigs in the early 2000s had a lot of tap dancing! I've only used the Future Impact with midi, so I've never needed to pay attention to this functionality.

The legacy setting sounds like it was best for the Deep Impact that only had 9 sounds. I liked how I could step through the DI presets when playing, then engage the sound after it was all queued up. I also use MIDI controllers for this stuff and with them it is perfectly possible to set up this “cueing” functionality should someone still like to have that. I also have dedicated buttons/actions for bank up/down and patch up/down so have all bases covered.

I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to use some kind of basic MIDI unit with the FI as even just having access to expression control is worth the entry price.

Yes, years ago. Then we promptly dismiss all the things we have no interest in.
When I get a new device that does a bazillion things, I tend to learn the three or four things that I need to do. There are many features to the FI that remain a mystery to me. My limited use scenario still yields a cornucopia of awesomeness.

It’s probably worth another read. I have revised it with each new firmware release since v3.00 and it now includes little programming tutorials and clearer explanations of certain parameters. I’ve put a lot of work into making it intelligible. It’s fully needed with hotlinks to sub-chapters and is fully searchable. I did some massive structural changes in v3.60 that make it way better than previous versions.

Smallest dedicated thing would be something like Panda’s 4Control. Or something like Disaster Area’s DMC Micro. I actually used my Source Audio Hub when I started out.

Then an expression pedal. Dunlop DVP4 mini expression is pretty small.

Yes, standard 5-pin midi cables. 4Control will act as a usb-to-MIDI interface for software updates and patch management too.

I'm using DMC mini baby with a mooer Expressline for an expression pedal. That's the smallest solution I could find.
