Future of music

At one time folks would play for themselves and small groups of family and friends just for the fun of it.

I think that's the next step as far as live music is concerned.

I'd say K-Pop,J-Pop and C-Pop will soon replace those genres.

Sales figures for music in 2018 totaled $19.1 billion, K-Pop accounted for $4.7 billion of that.

I'm holding out for K-doom.

Probably some form of wiki through a hand held device. Imagine a million people singing The New Seekers' "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" into their phones and playing it back as one chorus. Some fad like that will put us all out of business.

The times of 'next big new things' is gone. Ignore radio, explore places like Bandcamp and the DIY world of artists. It's fragmented, outrageously large and, for listeners, a beautiful experience (listening to jazz from Portugal as we speak). For artists it's tough, but it was never easy. Music will never die. Even if all the pro's quit for a regular day job, there will still be plenty of music around. I was able to fund, write, record, mix and release 4 albums in two years whilst having a regular day job. Not that I wánt pro's to quit for a regular day job, but it's possible.

Next big thing? I strongly doubt there will ever again be a "big thing" in music. The days of music revolution like Elvis and The Beatles are gone.

Next new thing in music? Music has no where to go anymore. It's all been done. It's been from par excellence to max disgust. All boundaries explored.

There will always be some excellent song writers and excellent bands doing genres of excellent music. But it won't be widely listened to. Radio is dead. Music/record stores dead. Cds dead. Although Lps are selling to a degree, it's not major.

Cleopatra Records? I recognize that name. Aren't they the ones being sued for polluting iTunes and streaming services with "re-recorded" music and originals that aren't transferring royalties to older acts? I think Four Jays Music is suing them along with another label namesake.

I find myself listening to a lot of Trap Music these days, as much of the edgy angst and bitter rage I liked in punk and grunge can be found there, albeit in largely melancholic form.

LOL you've rightly busted me on plagiarizing Gillespie, I also read that quote and it made me realize why I liked the genre, although
the stuff can get a little oppressively despairing; at least their was some joy and chest-beating in punk. Plagiarism aside, I invariably realize I like something new in rock because it reminds me of something old in rock (most often The Beatles).
