Fuzzes... Muff types - Buzzy types... Your favorites?

Hey guys,

Well, trying to complete my board with the perfect fuzzes, if that's ever possible lol, and trying to settle on the best options for a muff type fuzz and a buzzy synth-like fuzz "à la Time is running out".

So...

Your best muff type fuzz?

Your best buzzy synth-like fuzz?

Well, there are now clones of the Animato, if you need "the" Muse bass tone.

I really like my Green Russian style Big Muff.

For a ripping fuzz, nothing beats a Brassmaster. I wish it could be a little more gated though.

First off, you're on the right track. Excellent way to classify Fuzz's (muffy vs buzzy) because although both are technically "fuzz," they are not interchangeable. Having said that, I personally have gone thru what you are and after many, many, many pedals I myself have settled on the Rogue One for Muff and either a Big Game FY-2, Devi Ruiner, Mountainking HEavy Machine or Magnetar for synthy/buzz. The FY-2 in particular is a crushingly great pedal. It sucks the air out of the room in a really great way. Nothing comes quite close to it in my personal effects arsenal. Good luck!

Good lord am.......where to start! for me muff style id take a look at the cog tarkin, Rogue one,the Fuzzrocious Grey stache and the green carrot pedals pumpkin pi aswell, all of those are great but rig depending of course.



for mor fuzzy crazy stuff again have to go fuzzrocius with there heliotropic or lateral sound spore

I've owned around 12 muffs and the wren and cuff tfr is on my board now, though the earthbound supercollider and suf civil war are also both excellent.

The mastotron or wooly mammoth is an excellent for buzzy synthy sounds. I have to say though, the best synth sound I've ever come across is an oc2 into a muff, and I've got a woonly mammoth. If you haven't got an analog octaver, I'd consider that

I use the darkglass duality. It's basically two very different fuzz sounds (one is a synthy gated fuzz and the other they call modern high gain fuzz or something like that) You can blend the two different fuzz sounds together with the duality knob and also blend in your clean signal. The filter knob works like a low pass filter for the fuzz tone which really makes it work great when running through cabs with horns or if you run direct to FOH like I do. It cuts out high frequencies that are harsh but doesn't sound like someone threw blankets on your rig and the PA like some fuzz pedals with EQ/tone control do.

Those are the setting I like. I really like the modern fuzz sound. It's just a huge nasty (in a good way) sound with loads of low end and it doesnt get lost in the mix like all the other fuzz pedals I'd owned. I use it for a lot of parts where the guitar player is playing more lead type stuff but I also use it on some parts where the guitar is chugging along in drop A the duality is sick, by comparison the deluxe bass big muff is basically a bedroom pedal. I couldn't really hear the fuzz at all trying to play with the band with high gain metal type guitar tones with the big muff.

How long you had that fy-2 for MGR? I went fy-6 and now im not sure.

I'd say about two months or so. For buzz it pretty much is the best one I've found, but it is an extreme pedal. Every time I switch it on it feels like I turned on a supersonic weapon. The Ruiner, believe it or not, is actually tame in comparison. I'm literally afraid of causing bodily harm with the FY-2 with it's "air-out-of-the-room" feeling that it has. What's weird about that phenomenon is that when played with a mix it no longer feels like it's destroying the very fabric of time and space and sits gorgeously in the mix. Having said all that, the FY-2 sound is most definitely not (for me) a main tone, but an occasional effect. For a regular ol' fuzz sound I'd say the DOD Carcosa is the best all around one right now, but since the OP only asked for muff/buzz I didn't mention it.
