The last two times I played my ggi6 at home, I noticed a crackling noise like a loose connection. I suspected the output jack so today I cleaned it and it didn't help. If I tapped the bass it would make the noise. I opened the battery box and cleaned the contacts with Doxit-5. No improvement. I played with wires inside the control cavity and found nothing. Humm????

I thought about it for a while and decided to polish the contacts in the battery box with the eraser on a pencil. I did that and then again cleaned the contacts with Doxit-5. Now the bass is dead silent when I tap on the body.

I thought I would mention it here in case anyone else has that problem.

I have had the same problem. I even replaced the battery box and the other day I caught it doing it again. Thinking of removing the box and just running regular 9v connectors but would need a cover for the batteries. Is there something off the shelf that size?

The individual battery connectors are fine but I use a small screwdriver to pry them loose from the battery. If you just pull them off they may break. The battery box works just fine after being cleaned. The contacts look to be brass so I think this may be something that has to be cleaned. In the future I will polish the contacts each time the batteries are replaced and that should take care of it.

I live in a small town where all the music stores are mostly closed and this is the first time I have bought an instrument without playing it, its a weird feeling.

Pretty excited!

5 string basses and composite construction techniques are all new since I stopped playing stringed instruments. This B string will by itself make an interesting difference musically.

Hopefully things will be fine. Sometimes a bass from a store may arrive needing some adjustment. The readers here are quite knowledgeable about how to get them in good shape. I hope you like the bass. I particularly liked its beauty and power, and a light weight.

Yes I just no longer know how to do it, the forum seems like a great resource. And being able to interact with the proprietor and orginator of this technology is a privilege.

ok I don't mean to spam this thread but my bass arrived and I played it a bit. I realized that the setup on my old g&l bass so many years ago was somewhat painstakingly arrived at and though a lot of trial and error. But I do remember these things:

tension was high enough that the strings didn't flop around and buzz and clank
action was low enough and tension still low enough that the bass was pretty playable and fast
I settled on tape wound black strings because these gave the best tradeoff of sound tension, feel and longevity.

so how do I go about getting back to this? my new bass action is the right height more or less, at least its not bad, but the tension is a bit too low on the bottom two strings. the strings themselves while very high quality, need to be replaced with tape wound black. I measured the length to the middle of each tuning peg and I am not sure how to ensure that a string set will match the length of the bass while giving the correct medium high tension.

I sent this here instead of to various other threads or subforms because the scale of this bass is pretty specific and there are not that any out there. I'm going to call the bass guy at corner music tomorrow but I figured this thread is also likely to have some very knowledgeable options too

There are many 35” scale basses out there now. Usually you need something like 0.128 or so for the low B. I’m sure there’s a lot of string knowledge here on the forum. Does Mike Tobias sell strings? He makes a 35” 5-string I thought. Obviously Modulus too.

I ordered a couple different packs of Labella tape wound (black) and we will see. I know the minimum length is ok I am just unsure if all of the strings will wrap correctly around each tuning peg with just the thread, and still have the right tension. they say if the string itself wraps around the turner it will eventually break.

i've used la bella deep talkin' bass flats (760fl-b / xl scale) and they're nice but a bit stiff for my liking. settled on dr legend flats. a bit more to my taste. ymmv.
