Added my third G&L, the '89 El Toro. These are three VERY different sounding basses, all of them are wonderful. So, here's my G&L stable:

I've got a Tribute SB-2 that I'm totally in love with. Paid $350.00 for it used. Recently disconnected the bridge p/up, dropped it down into the body and wired a 62P Bass tone circuit in it and I'm really happy with the sound.

Used it @ a gig last weekend and I got some compliments from the other bass players.

Hey Chef, the "K" switch is actually different from the old school "single coil with bass boost". It's just single coil for the Jazz bass tone. The first time I tried a Tookay with this switch, I immediately traded in my '82 Tookay for it. And then I put in an order for an L2.5k with the "K" switch.

I recently emailed John @ G&L regarding modding my ASAT. I guess the "K" pickups have a third, blue, wire that taps the coils. here's his response:

Hello Kai,

A single coil tap requires the “K” version of our pickups and a 3way mini toggle.
Currently we do not have the “K” pickups available for sale.

^^^ Very interesting! I didn't know they had a different pickup for K-switching.

I've wired my L2500 for SC/"SC w/BB"/Parallel and I love it that way. It did require a 3-way switch. I don't have the schematic in an electronic form, but I'm sure someone here does. I just did it on my own... My pickups are the regular MFDs, so I don't know exactly what the "K-switching pickups" are. Probably not much more than an additional wire to make it "easy".

Any wiring scheme that's possible with a three wire version is possible with the normal four conductor versions. Why they would bother making a special "K" version of the pickups is entirely beyond me.

Noise control.

On the usual 4 wire G&L bass pickup the green wire comes off one end of a coil, connects to the metal baseplate of the pickup, and is extended on to the cavity. The "K" pickup has the green coming off the coil and going straight to the cavity. The extra, blue, wire connects to the baseplate.

The blue wire ensures as much quiet as possible in single coil mode and allows for better coil isolation (no bleeding in an unused coil).

I haven't had eyes on a "K" circuit, so can't comment on the model switch they're using and whether it's different than the switch we use for modding the non-"K" basses for single coil. If it is the same switch (C&K 7411), they're wiring it differently than we do.
