Cool! Thanks it was just one of those FMI deal's I had been meaning to ask about for awhile.
So Chef do you really want to get rid of that BABP L-2500 from what I have seen you have a great collection but I think that would be a real "Modern Day" collectible.

no, not really, but I get bored, and I ain't parting with any of my ancient iron.
so far, no one's offered anything interesting (to me) in trade, so, probably not;)

I posted it, based on the purchase of the bass below, and my "trying to adhere to a one in, one out rule."

However, posting the G&L for trade really does nothing to comply to the aforementioned (and arbitrary) rule.

Well that my friend would certainly make the trip to the Pack And Ship store less painful! So how is that one in one out deal going for ya? I have been adhering to my bass restraint mode now since the first of the year and actually been doing rather well, although I am a perpetual shopper I am reasonably happy with the collection I have accrued to date. Geez there are some nice basses out there!

Perhaps you guys can enlighten me: Is the tuner below what is currently used on USA G&L's?

I ask because mine do not have the allen screw at the bottom (what is its purpose btw?) and are also stamped with the G&L logo. Perhaps the pictured one is from a Tribute or something?

The USA tuners do not have the allen screw, they have G&L stamped on them and are pressed out of sheet. They are nickel plated (slight yellow tint when compared to the Tributes very shiny chrome plating).

The Tributes have the allen screw, don't have any markings, are die-cast and are chrome plated.

No idea what the allen screw does, never had to investigate so haven't touched it.

Edit. Just had another look The allen screw looks to hold the worm onto the shaft. The USA has the worm cut into the shaft so no screw is needed.

About 35-40 days ago I bought a brand new USA G&L L-2000 Butterscotch Blonde.....it has the factory hipshot logo'ed tuners...
Then a few days ago...I bought a brand new USA G&L L-2000 fullerton red and this one has the factory G&L logo'ed tuners...

Thought this was odd, both basses are brand new from G&L Dealers.....

does this maybe mean one could be last years stock? 2010? and then G&L switched to different tuners this year? 2011?
If so? Which is which years tuner?

I think the hipshot logo'ed Tuners look to be a bit more heavy duty looking...curious if one is better than the other, etc...
Does hipshot make the G&L logo'ed tuners for their USA basses?

For the USA basses:

G&L used to use Schaller pretty much exclusively. Then supply from Schaller become problematic, so the move was made to Hipshot. They have, in the past couple years or so, switched back to Schaller as the primary supplier with Hipshot running backup in case there are supply chain issues.

So, you will see lots of older G&Ls with G&L-stamped Schaller tuners, a few years worth of G&L-stamped Hipshot tuners, and now back to G&L-stamped Scahllers with Hipshot-stamped Hipshots running backup. Clear as mud, right?

As you might imagine, lead times when buying custom parts in quantity can be long and fraught with problems. Trying to keep inventory in check means that flexibility is sometimes necessary when sales outpace parts supplies. Gotta say that it's not a bad problem to have.

Fred's comments above are correct regarding the Tribute tuners. They are different critters and not directly compatible with their USA counterparts.

Ken, or anyone who knows

What is the visible difference between Schaller and Hipshot, or is it too subtle to describe? I was wondering which I have.

I have only 2 G&L basses to go by (unlike a few of you guys who seem to own half the G&L output between you).

1. A Tribute L-2000 that someone has really tried to make look like a USA model. USA tuners (not sure what type), Decal, and carefully removed the 'INDONESIA'. The only thing they missed was rotating the switches.

2. Tribute L-2500, totally stock.

As Ken rightly points out, the USA and Tribute tuners are not directly interchangeable, The mounting screw hole spacing is different so you need to drill new holes. The USA having a larger footprint covers the old holes if you do fancy a swap, but to be honest I wouldn't bother.

Thanks Chef, your photos and the 2 websites have cleared it up.

The Schaller website has proper engineering drawings (that I understand) so I can see that mine are Schallers, they have a pressed base plate that wraps over the worm spindle.

The Hipshots look to have either blocks attached to a flat baseplate or a diecast baseplate. Difficult to tell from a photo, and the website is no help there.
