Just got home from rehearsal. The tone of my L1000 through a mesa walkabout is wonderful. What a combo!

Question for those with older g&l with a finish thats starting to get gooey and smudged... What do you use to clean it? My bass was shiny when i got it 3 years ago. At that time it cleaned up with a dry cotton cloth nicely but not anymore. The finish is getting messed up fast. I need some mild solvent to get the crud off and maybe a wax coat?

No, not solvent! At least not in my opinion...that'll take the finish right off?

I used several grades of Meguire's automotive cleaner/restoration on my 1980, when I first got it. I I did a thread on that over at BABP:

There is even less visible red on the real thing, it may have faded away. I previously thought it was Tobacco Burst, but a check at the database says she is a 3 TB.
Brian Poole aka 'Notabob' advertised her in this forum a few years back (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f126/ft-g-l-asat-semi-hollow-370312/) and sold her to the last owner before me. This picture below was attached to Brian's ad. I guess he was the original owner. There seems the finish was more red at the time compared to today.

She has a #8 neck and I am planning to replace it with a #6 neck. The old crest-shaped neck plate with 3 screws (2003) raises a problem as the newer rectangular design is with 6 screws.

Ill check that out thanks! Is your finish of the softer blEmishable type? I think its poly but i cant say for sure. I can easily scratch it with a fingernail. I have seen variation in finishes on old g&ls but i suspect differences may be from the environment they are exposed to.

I don't know that for sure.
Mild solvents wouldn't hurt poly if you're careful.
Solvents can wipe off an older nitro finish fairly easily.

Always test a small section you don't care about first.

Hey Guys, boy there are some cool basses around here..Got a couple of questions for you G&L guys, first I used to have a US L-2000 and it was awesome should have never sold it, have a change to trade my Duck Dunn for a G&L JB-2 (US) and just wondering how different, or the same the two sound compared to each other, and what do you guys think a used but great condition (US)G&L JB-2 would go for ? Thanks Guys

Edi for momentary brain fart. The JB-2 is a really well executed Jazz bass, excellent production quality and spot on Jazz tone.


Values from what I have seen are 900-1100 depending on options and condition.
